i really enjoyed this, i wanna say itās up there for favorites of this era..! & as others have said, def my favorite āpantheonā ep so far. & iām already waaaayy more into belindaās dynamic with the doctor when compared to rubyās tbh!
i was pleasantly surprised with good pacing given this eraās track record so far. & we got supporting characters that actually have some flesh to em unlike poor sasha 55
i was a bit skeptical of the fan scene at first but i think it ends up working nicely within the episode!
idk if thereās anything to this other than being a common characteristic of the gods, but the film tendrils holding the doctor reminded me of maestro holding ruby with music tendrils.. & speaking of things that keep showing up, iām sure gonna be on the lookout for spoons in the future!
had a whole lotta fun watching this. hooray!
i was thinking that too actually! i couldnāt remember what tooth and claw was called, only that it was the werewolf one, but lux was definitely giving very similar vibes
This was not what I expected. There were a lot of great ideas in Lux and some splendid set pieces and visuals. Yet, for me, this episode seemed to less than the sum of its parts. I think my biggest problem with it was that it had no consistent internal logic. I love things that work in a crazy way and cartoon logic is wonderful, but I felt that this isnāt what we got. There were a lot of lovely story ideas that didnāt seem to get explored or resolved in such a way that I can only assume that the edit had to be so brutal that we lost resolutions. The missing people were missing, trapped in celluloid apparently, and then not missing again. The explosion of film burning let the sunlight in. How did Belinda work out that the projection booth would give way to sunlight? Wouldnāt it have been easier to open the exit doors and let light in that way? Mr Pieās story about his wife seemed rushed and, while it stalled on an emotional moment, it lacked its own backstory. I enjoyed the Doctor Who fans, but would have liked them to be better characterised. I know that everything was meant to be two-dimensional in depth, but it seemed to be more of a string of things happening than a story. Iām complaining; there was a lot of fun to be had, but I think we needed more than 45 minutes in which to have it. In an old school four parter we could have played around with being cartoons a bit more. I would have liked some Wile E Coyote moments: drawing and then using tunnels, dropping anvils and being flattened and so on. As it was, the Doctor and Belinda became cartoons and then immediately fixed that with their own back stories (presumably for budget reasons). They were trapped in celluloid for longer, but the world they were in felt less explored than I would have liked.
However, the Miami set looked amazing. Ncuti and Varada looked absolutely stunning, and their performances were excellent. I enjoyed watching Lux, but just felt a tiny bit frustrated because I was expecting to be blown away, but the story ended up being, well, a bit flat. Itās almost as if the boneless might have been better adversaries this time around.
I feel a bit mean saying that this is a 6/10, but I do feel that the relative lack of story let down the stunning visuals.
I have really mixed feelings on this episode. Lots of it I thought was good, like the concept of Lux and film coming to life, how creepy Mr Ring a Ding was especially when he turned 3D, the setting, and the handling of segregation.
But there were several isolated parts of it that really made me cross. Like: yet another pantheon God, which I honestly think is getting ridiculous and not Doctor-Who-ish at all. When I heard that stupid laugh from The Giggle, and saw the letters spelling harbinger, it made me exclaim at the screen in frustration. 2 episodes with a harbinger reveal is enough, we really donāt need it to become an ongoing thing. And all the fans saying Blink was their favourite, which didnāt make sense because they were clearly meant to be crazy fans like us, and had classic who merch. Itās more casual fans of New Who only who would all say that Blink was their favourite. And Belinda seeming to just trust the Doctor and no longer have that kind of enmity with him that made the first episode so great.
My overall impression was of a good episode, but it was ruined by a constant feeling of anger and irritation at the way Doctor Who seems to be going. Iāve never felt this before watching the RTD2 era, and I canāt tell whether itās a sign that thereās genuinely something wrong with these episodes, or if Iām just one of those bad fans who always thinks the current era is the worst.
This stuff does feel a bit hand-holdy and repetitive. Like, we get it. You donāt need to remind us about Harbingers and clunkily show anagrams and letters every time. But hey. Itās also a bit of a minor quibble IMO.
I think we all react more strongly to things we donāt like about the episodes that are currently being broadcast. Itās much easier to be forgiving about stories that have already aired and are in the past. Donāt feel bad about not liking certain aspects of the new era! Itās all good.
Watched it this morning while having my breakfast, meeting a friend later & I know theyāll want to talk about it. Its still RTD2 Doctor Who but more enjoyable for me, the flaws are less pronounced this time. I may elucidate laterā¦you have been warned!
