You’re thinking too much about the normal rules of the universe. The gods live by the rules of play!
Is this the third time in TV Doctor Who that a character smoking is crucial to the plot?
I suppose one could argue we had a similar case like we had with 15 & Berlinda where they just luckily escaped from the Film before it fully burned down? But that’s probably a stretch.
What are the other two times?
Unearthly, episode 2 with the Doctor’s pipe is one.
As @Tian has said, An Unearthly Child, but also The Ghost Monument!
Just wondering, what do we all think about Belinda’s progression in terms of her stance towards the Doctor? From the end of last episode, to the end of this one kissing his hand. Earned or not?
Welcome! Feel free to introduce yourself in Introductions
As for your question - I think she understood him more and learned to trust him, it was good if not a little rushed but then we only had 45mins
Katy Manning
She’s just so joyful!!!
Was an okay episode 6/10. I really liked at the beginning when Belinda tells the Doctor about her parents, it reads as one of those techniques used to get a kidnapper to sympathize with you and let you go. Also, how we see Belindas tendency for self-sacrifice once again, if Pye didn’t insist to go himself, she would have lighted those films on fire without a doubt.
Given that we are only two episodes in, it does appear a bit rushed but there are still upcoming episodes to see the tension and their dynamic further develop.
Finally got around to watching Lux, yeah that was great
I liked this episode overall, but that was my biggest issue with it. I did feel like it was a bit rushed, and I was hoping they’d linger at least a little longer on her being reluctant to go on adventures. Maybe they’ll return to it later though, who knows. And to be fair, it’s hard not to be charmed by Ncuti Gatwa lol.
I really enjoyed this episode! I’m glad, because I didn’t like TRR that much. Mr Ring a Ding was fun to watch, and I like Belinda much more this episode. I didn’t really vibe with her last episode, but I thought the scene in the TARDIS was great. (even though we still didn’t see any more of the interior!!!) The development of her relationship with the Doctor felt believable.
I thought The bit with the fans was funny and I enjoyed it, but it felt a bit long and out of place.
The pacing was better than last episode, but some scenes went on a little long, and I would have liked to see more of what Mr Ring a Ding could do besides come to life. The second half also confused me a little, I still don’t get how the Doctor knew how to beat mr ring a ding
I’m also not a fan of this pantheon thing. I much prefer Doctor who to have smaller stakes, with occasional larger ones, because if the Doctor can defeat a god in one episode with minimal death and destruction, it makes the the gods not really feel like gods.
Overall, I had a lot of fun, and I’m excited for next week.
I hope that it continues to be something she wants to pursue when they land, and that she remains a good person who wants to help. I liked the inner conflict she had at the beginning of the episode, and I think they can build on that, even if they are more friendly now.
I actually agree with what you’ve said about the fan scene here. The switch over who was fictional did sort of come from nowhere and reflecting a bit, I think this scene had the same effect on me as the Anita bit in Joy to the World. I like both bits as scenes/stories but felt they detracted from the overall story (which I loved. Mr Ring a Ding was sooo creepy and brilliant).
I loved the 50s aesthetic and the bits about segregation and all in all a great episode. The animated Belinda and Doctor were great and I liked how the two of them slightly adapted their performance to fit the style. That was subtle and clever.
I am one of those fans! I’m rating it a 7/10!
I enjoyed this episode a lot– I love how wild and silly it got, although I really wish they would have pushed those scenes ’in’ the film stock further. I like that they went there but I wish we could have done more– maybe animations in a bunch of different styles, slipping sideways through film stock into a bunch of different genres… but that might have broken the budget!
I really loved the opening, especially everything set in the diner. That moment where the Doctor talks about toppling worlds was really gorgeous, and it was gorgeous specifically because Belinda is not convinced by it– she has to sit with the horror and the weight of history for a moment longer. Extremely sensitively handled in my opinion.
Loved the projectionist! His story was a whole episode in and of itself and I’m quite sad we didn’t get to see more of it.
I enjoyed the fans! I thought they were cute. Not groundbreaking but it felt warm and appreciative. I thought the music in that scene was extremely overbearing though– and it kept taking me out of the moment because I recognised the track!
I’m a rare defender of From Out of the Rain and this episode reminded me happily of it!
Interesting that people are mentioning the pacing. I watched this one with my family and they mentioned the pacing as their major issue with the episode– it did feel it lagged quite a bit in the middle.
Very funny @Guardax
