Agreed. I think it works better here because technically Mr. Ring a Ding wasn’t defeated, but more so brought far away, where he couldn’t cause any Mayhem anymore (although I must admit I still need to wrap my Head around it if I fully properly understood that part ).
Naff. I didn’t like it when 11 used regeneration energy to heal River’s hand, and I didn’t care for it here. It cheapens it, IMO. Too easy a fix.
What might be interesting, though, is if this was RTD saying, “Okay, the bigeneration excess is gone, we’re back to normal regenerations now” which, given the meta commentaries in the episode, feels like it could be deliberate.
Yeah perhaps in another universe where we got 13 episodes a series, each god episode could be a two-parter and more difficult to defeat. Oh well!
You know what, I actually would’ve loved the audacity more if they’d gone one step further and have 15 and Belinda pop out of Steven Moffat’s telly. “Thanks for the landmine, that was a good challenge!” Like, I’m not overly fond of meta stuff like this but I do think, hey, if you’re gunna go for it… really go all-out with it! Why not.
My frustration is that this episode had a lot of little concepts which felt like first thoughts but weren’t really developed or challenged or pushed. “Cartoons come to life” is what every 7 year old imagines, but I felt like someone needed to prod RTD and say “okay, and then what?” I dunno, I just think they could’ve really gone further with a few elements of this one.
absolute cinema. I fell in love with Lux, I think it’s my favorite pantheon so far! The photography was stunning, this episode won me over so much💕
Yeah, for sure! I’m enjoying them, and I admire how this episode started to weave them all together with flashbacks and connections to other gods. I like that, and I’m starting to get a feel for what RTD’s vision is. But them popping up every few episodes when we only get 8 episodes a season - it’s not RTD’s fault but it feels a bit too easy when they’re defeated each time. Like they’ve now just become run of the mill monster of the week. Something that caught my attention today was “you defeated the Toymaker, the Maestro, and the God of Death!” and I thought, “yeah, he has… so surely any gods coming after the god of death are going to be (a) lesser than Sutekh anyway and (b) surely easier to defeat.”
I also like the idea that they’re all playing games. But I’m not sure I buy this new “they’re bound by honour and rules to tell us how to defeat them” shtick.
The collection sets behind them weren’t in the right order. They’re fake ruddy fans!
I love that they’re tackling racism, segregation and the fact the Doctor (and companion) aren’t white, but in a way that doesn’t just stop the plot or feel heavy-handed. I enjoyed 15’s little nod to Belinda that he just waits for some worlds to topple themselves, and meanwhile he just lives and shines within them. I thought that was a lovely sentiment.
I slept until 1 pm today (haven’t been able to do that for a while), watched “Lux” with my mother, and we both loved it! I haven’t seen any screenshots of the fans’ bookshelf yet, but if they don’t have any SJA DVDs, they’re fake fans /hj. “Lux” is definitely my favorite RTD2 era episode so far! I want this too!!
I think these gods will culminate with this season,I do miss traditional aliens ngl.
I think the bit about meeting their best friends was the really important and lovely bit. The Blink stuff was just a gag and one the casual viewer would be able to get.
It did amuse me that one of the fans had a Beep the Meep t-shirt. Would’ve been funnier in hindsight if she’d had a plushie, given that real world fans hoped they’d make some and never did.
I like to imagine the Pantheon of Discord Gods weekly meeting.
Multiple entities are sat around the table, SPECTRE style.
“So guys… more bad news I’m afraid. The Toymaker was defeated by a game. We also lost Maestro last month, our god of music defeated by music. Then we lost the big chief, ol’ Sutekh, god of death, defeated by… death. And just last night Lux, god of all things light, was defeated by light. We’re gunna have to rethink our strategy, fellas…”
Not a spoiler but speculation about the finale

“Well at least they get defeated by the Doctor and not by a middle age Woman and some meddling Kids, isn’t that right, Trickster?”
Sorry couldn’t resist
“Trickster even got a few attempts. His obsession with Sarah Jane was borderline creepy anyway, so thank god we kicked him out.” - Mrs Flood
How did the fifteen cinema-goers come back to life? When the film reels burnt, I guess it was lucky the film containing those people didn’t go up with it, I guess? And then they just sort of reappeared because the episode remembered it needed a happy ending. The third act lost me a little.
