Ooh, this is interesting:
I can see what people are saying about UNITâs depiction being slightly at odds with what this story was trying to do/say but I still maintain that there is only so far we can extrapolate the âpoliticsâ of an episode into the real world before things start to fall apart and, as someone who comes to Doctor Who for adventure and fun and escapism and stories, the politics of an episode always come as a very low priority (itâs probably why I canât get worked up over Kerblamâs ending).
But thatâs just me and I know others come to the show wanting different things.
Looks like that confirms the Think Tank from Robot is not intended to be the same, but could be related!
Has anyone read any of 15s books?
Oh I love that
Maybe heâs mellowing in his old age - I only caught word of this from the Reddit discussion on this episode, as I value my mental health a little too much to follow-along with what Ian Levine has to say. At least heâs also been able to recognize the quality of the remainder of the season, but Iâll quite happily stand in an a camp opposite to Ian in this one.
The more I think about it the worse it becomes. Enough people in this thread have taken away enough conflicting things that I feel happy to stand beside my opinion of this as a total mess.
Boo - this was basically one of the only things helping me keep a tenuous grasp on some good feeling towards this episode.
I have read all of the Fifteenth Doctorâs books What do you want to know?
This is how the Sarah Jane Smith audios can still win⌠even if itâs not ââcanonââ itâs true to me
What are they like?
Ruby Red was really good
Caged was good.
Eden Rebellion was kind of meh
But itâs all canon! (Yes, even the boring TV Comic that you read once to bump your %, even thatâs canon)
This was an interesting episode. I didnât have time to watch it until last night, so Iâm glad I could avoid any spoilers.
Stuff I liked:
The twist completely surprised me (although i did think Conrad taking a photo of ruby at the start was a bit creepy)
Kate was awesome! One of my favourite of her appearances.
Even if Iâm pretty neutral on Ruby as a character, she was written and acted well and I wasnât bored.
The Doctorâs speech at the end was fantastic, I love it when the Doctor shows their darker side, and Ncuti played it really well.
Stuff I didnât like:
This episode felt out of place. I was just getting into Belindaâs character and story arc, and then this comes along, which barely has the Doctor and focuses on a past companion, and it killed the momentum of the series for me.
I also donât really get UNIT. I was under the impression that they were secret, but suddenly everyone knows about them? I think the show should just establish what they are, secret or public? military or scientific?
Another minor thing: why are they giving Kate a romance?? I generally dislike when Doctor Who has too much romance, but as well as that, it seems really out of character for Kate to have a relationship with a subordinate (and I also think sheâs a lesbian)
(The saddest thing for me is that I was a bit down before watching this, and I hoped it would cheer me up like Doctor Who usually does, and it didnât. my favourite tv Show isnât bringing me as much joy as it used to is sadâŚ)
Doctor Who canon: Everything happened⌠except when it didnât.
This was mentioned in The Giggle:
Mention of Kateâs dad again
I had forgotten about this, thanks for pointing it out!
Not to mention that Ibrahiam is such a Nothing-Character. Like, whatâs his deal? What do we know about him? What makes him a Character to make us the Audience care about him? Despite me subscribing to the popular âKate Lesbianâ-Headcanon as well, I would have given it a Pass if a) they had Chemistry b) Ibrahiam was a Character.
While I am famously somebody at times very hard to please with any kind of romantic Subplots (especially in Who), I think it could work, if there was more to chew on. But there literally isnât.
