I just finished Joy to the World and I think I prefer it to CORR. It’s a fun episode with good heart felt moments. I liked Anita and the Doctor doing normal things was nice to see. Plot’s good and Joy is a good character. She could’ve done more though.
I definitely preferred it to The Church on Ruby Road which I found quite lacklustre.
Right, finally going back in…
So far my issues remain exactly as they did on first viewing.
I don’t find it charming and I don’t find it fun and that’s a huge obstacle as that seems to be what the episode needs to be. Indeed, it’s what people seem to see in it.
Whereas I find the structure hugely irritating and the bits that are meant to be charming are either stymied by the structure I don’t like or just play as overt manipulation. Obviously a story does manipulate, all stories do, but it’s meant to be subtle, sleight of hand. The success of that manipulation lies in not feeling like the story is obvious in its manipulation. But again, because of the irritating structure, it has forced its own hand and can’t be graceful about it. So it’s rather like a sledgehammer.
(Incidentally, always my biggest problem with much of post-2005 Who to varying degrees so not just this episode - just this one more than many).
So apologies, I’m no convert and was hoping for a greater re-evaluation than this unfortunately but it still does not work for me, almost at all.
A shame. Roll on next season I guess. Just with fingers more tightly crossed than usual
manifesting a christmas special with ncuti that i actually like in 2025… lol
This is interesting. I think both Ncuti specials have been great!
for me i’ve not liked both but i liked a lot of the s1 eps!!
Yeah, I think s01 was great even if the ending did not live up to the rest of the season.
Everyone hates on the ending of EoD.
But I was beaming as he dragged Sutekh through the Time Vortex.
Seeing it on the big screen at the cinema was amazing and I had goosebumps.
for me i hated ruby’s mum being a nobody, rtd trying to emulate rey from star wars except unlike rey, ruby had SO much mystery behind her parentage and supernatural stuff which got awuflly explained.
That made me so happy to see too, made me feel all like a little kid again
I had no problem with that. I thought that part was great! To me, it did not answer some questions that great. But I think it is an okay final episode.
Have you read this Adoption and Doctor Who, @thegallifreyanrebel explains it really well.
I loved that she was a nobody. Was fully expecting her to be the Rani or something.
i’ve not, i will do though! i do think the execution as i said was poor, considering rtd decided to take inspo from rey which was handled much better in tlj specifically.
I dont think that Rey was handled better. It would have been so much better if she was nobody.
in tlj it was handled well imo, i think it was handled abysmally in tros - i loathe jj abrams for that movie so much.
I don’t mind that she’s just ordinary, we’ve had our share of “important” companions. I didn’t like that it was set up as such a bait and switch that I didn’t feel was resolved satisfactorily. I’ve read the other thread and I’m glad some were able to get more enjoyment out of it than I did.
That trilogy of movies needed a solid plotline to have been laid down from the start.
Initially they wanted Kylo to be irredeemably evil, and be the “big bad” in the third movie.
But the Last Jedi killed off both Snoke, and set Kylo up for a redemption arc. I really dislike “somehow Palpatine returned”, but Abrams had sod all to work with. (And the untimely death of Carrie Fisher)
The Last Jedi is my favourite Star Wars movie outside the original trilogy, but it really left Abrams with nothing to work with story wise.
(I do think it is funny though how hard Dave Filoni is working on the TV shows to have the cloning of force users and Palpatine’s return make sense )
the last jedi is my favourite star wars film, and the only film ive seen more than twice in cinema (i saw it… 6 times… the holdo scene is just incredible. i really like the direction it took rather than rehashing a previous film like the force awakens did. i completely agree though they needed a consensus and i dont know why they decided to have 3 different people do the trilogy and not one person, it made no sense and the output shows that. its a shame because the leaked original final movie from colin treverrow (i thinks his name) sounded far better than the abysmal rise of skywalker. however because of the awful star wars fans they caved in and brought back jj to save the day… look how that went, trying to please fans so much you please none of them.
Star Wars and Star Trek fans can agree on one thing. And that’s our thoughts on JJ Abrams
