Empire of Shadows - A 'Torchwood: 4000' Thread

Likely the last of the these threads I’ll make. There’s no ‘Torchwood: 4000’ boxset, but there’s four stories (including a ‘trilogy’ in the main range) following this team!

The ‘Torchwood: 4000’ team is comprised of characters who survived The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, who, as mentioned in the episode, were sent to Krop-Tor by The Torchwood Archive, each story featuring one a different member (with Zachary Cross-Flame, the leader, being in two). Their stories all take place after that two-parter which is set in the year 4221 (hence me calling them ‘Torchwood: 4000’)

The main range stories that take place in this era are:

  • Empire of Shadows
  • Odyssy
  • Oodunnit
  • Oracle

This is also the era that’s closest in time to the special release ‘The Torchwood Archive’, which is set in 4421.

What do you think about The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit?
Have you listened to any of these stories? Which is your favourite?
What do you think about the idea of far future Torchwood Stories? Do they interest you more or less than historical Torchwood stories?

really enjoyed the ood trilogy, wasn’t fussed at all on empire of shadows personally. i’d love to hear a boxset with this team!

Oh also since I mentioned other stories in the time period for The Victorian Era, there’s a few others here too:

  • Blogs of Doom - Acting Captain Zachary Cross-Flame (set just before The Impossible Planet and just after The Satan Pit)
  • Battles In Time - #8-11’s Cyberman 4-Parter (not sure when it is, but it’s in the future and makes mention of ‘The Torchwood Archive’, I personally place it before Impossible Planet)
  • Tardisodes - Tardisodes 8 and 9 (prequels to the events of The IMpossible Planet and The Satan Pit)
  • DW:RPG Aliens and Creatures - The Rosetta Plague (An RPG scenario 20 years after The Satan Pit)

There’s also a couple of plot hooks in The DW:RPG’s 10th Doctor Sourcebook, one saying that the events of the two parter could’ve been someone sending them to release The Beast, and one set a year later where the members of the team are reliving their worst fears. As suggestions for plots I think they’re worth mentioning, but keeping off the main list

Cosmic horror like from The Satan Pitt/Impossible Planet fits Torchwood, I just wish they explored it more.

I like Zachary and Chloe’s dynamic, but the rest of the team weren’t as developed.

The way I imagined the creature in We Always Get Out Alive and the voice in Made You Look I’d also say are cosmic horrors.

TSC has some good cosmic horror moments too, but imo doesn’t deliver on the concepts as well as it could.
