On the crystalline planet of Yewa, the Gardens of Kubuntu are a true Eden, said to be the most peaceful destination in the universe. At least, until the Doctor and Ruby arrive. Ancient rivalries between Yewa and its more prosperous sister world of Bia are being stirred by forces unknown, threatening to plunge its people into anarchy. With Ruby swept up in the fire of the Yewan rebellion, the Doctor finds dark secrets buried deep in the planet’s ancient history – and his hopes for a lasting peace hanging by a thread. For sinister guardians stalk the Gardens of Kubuntu, while an implacable enemy plots in the shadows – and in plain sight…
Why have a plant pot without any plants?’
Ruby looked around. Sure enough, every shiny plant pot and immaculate flowerbed was empty.
‘Weird,’ she said.
‘I hope this isn’t another duck pond situ,’ murmured the Doctor. ‘That wouldn’t be cute.’
‘Duck pond?’
‘Ignore me.’ He smiled.
In conversation with Inverse , Steven Moffat revealed the true explanation of the duckless duck pond. “There are lots of inconsistencies in Amy Pond’s life. The ducks have gone through the crack,” he says. He had intended to resolve the mystery in the season’s final moments, using the ducks to bookend the entire crack saga. “The last shot of the show was meant to be the Tardis in the town center as Amy and Rory rush in. The Tardis dematerializes and we see ducks on the duck pond, that was meant to be it.” "The trouble was, we had terrific weather problems every day. We came back and it was even worse. We never got to shoot the scene, so we had to transfer that scene to Amy’s backyard,” Moffat says.
I finished this book today. I wasn’t a big fan. The cover is gorgeous, and Falase really gets Fifteen and Ruby right! The setting is fleshed out and vivid, but the supporting characters got lost in the mix, and the plot felt busy yet slow and uninteresting. So while Fifteen and Ruby are the best-written yet, this was my least favourite of these first three Fifteen books.
That’s too bad, I am still only 3 chapters in and have mainly felt that the writer has understood the characters. But I will keep reading and give my opinions.
I have now finished the book and I must confirm most of your review. It is boring by the end and I don’t really care about the plot. I gave it a bit of a higher rating than you but I agree with your analysis.
