I am watching this now. This time I found a version with the telesnaps combined with the BBC soundtrack and I love this version.
I tend to recommend the animations for newcomers because they are more accessible. Some of them exist in black-and-white and colour versions! There are a few exceptions to this. The Reign of Terror animation isn’t’ very good, and the Web of Fear animation is orrendous. I’d probably pick another option for those stories.
As mentioned by @Tian, a very good alternative is a combined version, where the Loose Cannon telenspa reconstruction is combined with the BBS coudntrack. This gives a very authentic experience, where you can get a visual estimation of the story while listening to the original soundtrack and have the narrator fill in the gaps in moments where there is no dialogue.
I think that part of the classic journey is to find your preferred way of watching these episodes.
Definitely, and it can vary between stories. The Myth Makers, for instance, doesn’t have a very good telesnap reconstruction, and the BBC soundtrack is a bit boring without visuals. There’s obviously no animation yet. So I find the novelisation to be the best version of it. Meanwhile, The Macra Terror has marvellous animation, while the elenspa reconstruction for Marco Polo is superb!
When I’ve been watching the missing episodes, what I have is largely the telesnap reconstructions and some of the animations, so I watch whichever one I have. But what I typically do these days is I pull it up on one monitor on my computer, and then on the other monitor, I go over to:
http://www.chakoteya.net/DoctorWho/index.html
and pull up the transcript of the serial in question. Sometimes I catch what it going on better having a copy of what was just said there…
That might be a good idea too. Some of the surviving soundtracks are poor quality. The aforementioned Myth Makers, for instance, is sometimes hard to follow because you can’t hear very well what the characters are saying.
Soon… Very, very soon… I am going to press play on An Unearthly Child…
Woooo! I look forward to following your first journey through Classic!
It will be fun to follow your journey. Remember it is not a sprint it is a marathon. It is okay if it takes time!
With that said: PRESS PLAY NOW!!!
Well, I’m probably going to watch the first couple of parts and watch the rest some other time this week, so-
Ok, ok, chill out, I need to set the DVD up first!
Yes, remember that you’re not a real fan unless it takes you 26 years to complete Classic Who! That’s what it took for the OG fans!
I’m probably going to have to use a portable DVD player, seeing as our normal one is broken at the moment.
Pressing play in 3… 2… 1…
Let’s do this!
So the DVD player just died…
A charger has been found!
It was Stef Coburn’s attempt at preventing you from watching the story!
And we’ve just had the ‘red Indian’ line.
The TARDIS has just taken off, in a very different way from normal.
My ears hurt.
