DontBlink's Classic Adventures!

Oh, and that’s part one done!

Probably won’t have time to finish part two actually, but I can still make a start.

What did you think of it? It is more or less a story in it self.

I’ll tell you once I’ve got through Cave of Skulls.

That’s me finished for now! (The Doctor has just commented on the fact the TARDIS is still a Police Box.)

Now it’s time for my thoughts on part one!

On the subject of telesnap reconstructions, I second @SweetAIBelle’s recommendation of having Chakoteya’s transcripts up to read along. Can really help for both understanding the dialogue (no lips to read as they speak), I think they’re often more accurate than subtitles, and they sometimes provide a bit more information in the non-dialogue parts than the scrolling text. If you like Big Finish, think of recons like an audio drama that happens to also have some pictures and clips so you can see what things look like.

Thoughts, Opinions, and Random Musings:
An Unearthly Child: An Unearthly Child

This is where it all begins, and while it has it’s highlights, I’m sad to say, in my opinion, it’s nothing special.

The acting, particularly from Hartnell (essily the highlight for me), is all rather good.

A lot of aspects of the episode are rather… of it’s time. Not least Barbara and Ian following their student home!

We do, however, get some great dialogue, and it’s fun to see how different Doctor Who is now.

But it doesn’t feel like witnessing television history.

Next: The Cave of Skulls

To be fair I think this is meant to be presented as a rather strange thing to do anyway, but with them justifying to themselves that they’re concerned for her safety (plus they’re technically not following her home, they go to her home address and get there before her)

I think it’s nice they cared enough tbh.

Interesting take! One I don’t think I’ve seen before! It’s definitely a product of its tone, but so is all of Classic. I find the first episode to be a bona fide sci-fi classic, but maybe I’m just blinded by its status as the first-ever episode (and the fact that it’s followed by three episodes of what I believe to be boring caveman politics).

Don’t make me defend those episodes again!

I can back you up this time!!!

As will I. 2-4 are underrated episodes as far as I’m concerned.

I got your back on this! They are not boring, they are kind of mid!

Eh, I’ll just back out of this and go back to ranting about The Web Planet!

An example of the ambition exceeding the studio’s budget and capability, and a lot of their experimental decisions make it a borderline intolerable watch, even if I appreciate the attempt. It doesn’t help that it has so little plot to support it.

The time has come for me to return to the Cave of Skulls…

So, that was just 24 minutes of a lot of screaming and not a lot of plot.

There is a line that stood out to me though:

“Old men never like new things to happen.”

I feel this serial is best enjoyed watching each part individually, so next time, I’ll enter the Forest of Fear.

You’re right, there’s not a whole lot of an in-depth plot to it, it’s very simple in that regard. I think what’s bigger and more important is seeing the developing dynamics between the Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara, and also some thematic resonance with the lessons the cavemen also come to learn.

I have finished The Forest of Fear, and now only have The Firea ker to go!

I might take another break though.
