Although I generally love getting minor spoilers (the kind that give little hints to the plot but donāt reveal twists or anything that wouldnāt be apparent within the first few minutes of an episode) in interviews, I think RTD needs to stop talking until the episodes air.
Speaking to io9, showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that a new documentary will look back on the making of Doctor Whoās returnāand why itās happening a little later than you might expect.
Last week, Doctor Who marked a major milestoneāthe 20th anniversary of the airing of āRoseā, the landmark episode that brought the show back to TV after almost 20 years in hiatus, kicking off a whole new era. But it did so in a relatively quiet manner compared to Whoās usual recent grand anniversary overtures. But it turns out thereās a reason for thatāand that soon enough, itāll be rectified.
Speaking to io9 over Zoom ahead of the seriesā latest return in a few weeks, showrunner Russell T Davies exclusively confirmed there are plans for an hour-long episode of Doctor Who Unleashed, the seriesā behind-the-scenes companion show, that will explore and celebrate the making of Doctor Whoās revival era. It will air in the coming months on the BBC iPlayer in the UK, and worldwide on Doctor Whoās YouTube channel.
The reason it didnāt arrive timed to the anniversary of āRoseā? Well, in part, Davies himself.
āTo be honest, [the anniversary wasnāt on my mind]. Iām very much aware how on Disney+ worldwide, going to some territories that have never had Doctor Who before,ā Davies told io9 as he reflected on the latest season of the show airing so close to the 20th anniversary of āRoseā. āThere are some people watching this to who Ncuti is the Doctorāthe number one, their Doctor, and so youāve got to bear that in mind. Thatās always been the case, for many years, to look for that new audience. So I actually thought itād be a bit backward, be a bit heavy handed to [acknowledge]⦠and now weāre here and Iām kind of slightly kicking myself, because everyone seems to be full of joy about it!ā
Seeing that joy in the build up to the anniversary ultimately spurred Davies into realizing the series should also celebrate in some way too, and chose to do so with the new documentary. āItās coming out late, because I was the one saying āletās not do anything!ā,ā Davies laughed. āAnd then quite late in the day I changed my mind! āEveryoneās talking about it, letās do something!ā. So we are.ā
Stay tuned to io9 next week for more from our talk with Russell T Davies. Doctor Who returns for a new season of adventures on the BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and worldwide on Disney+, from April 12.
Honestly itās okay if RTD just stops giving interviews generally Unless heās making jokes about Doctors dying in whirlpools, thatās pretty funny
Iād rather he said it was late because they were busy with the new show, not because he didnāt think it was a good idea to celebrate. Sounds quite sad really.
RTD both says too much and says not enough, itās a fascinating skill he has
Iāll be honest, Iāve found his perspective on everything since becoming showrunner again quite bizarre.
To be fair, the main star of the show from 2005 wonāt return his calls
That gets a yikes/10 from me
It might be kind of a humble thing. He says it as the show had its anniversary and that him bringing it back is not that big of a thing because that is not the real start of it.
Also, heās said earlier that it feels odd to celebrate the 20th anniversary now when we just celebrated the 60th anniversary and the BBC Centenary before that.
My guess is that we would have a bigger presence of celebration this year if there were another showrunner than the one that brought it back. It is almost like a celebration in itself that he is back.
Anniversaries all the way down
Could be. Then again, we didnāt see a 10th anniversary celebration in 2015 either, and that was under Moffatās reign.
I canāt wait for The Robert Revolution
Who is Robert?
