The Rani only appears twice in TV Classic Who[1] and the novelizations are short. If that’s your preference, you don’t have anything to lose by reading them instead of watching. I’ve only read one novelization from that era (a different episode) and while it was a faithful retelling, the magic wasn’t there like it is on screen. But the novella I read and the Rani ones you’re interested in are from different authors, so it might be a better experience for you.
The Rani also appears in a BBV audio series and two Big Finish audios if listening also appeals to you (but definitely read Mark and Time first).
There’s one thing that’s very consistent with this season and last season tbh… But it’s starting to annoy me.
The over-use of pastel colours in the set designs. I hate them. They fit quite a few of the episodes, but they end up making them all feel kind of the same. If something is truly incorrect or alien or otherworldly, do not use the same set design colours as your Earthly locations.
It’s really strange how Russell makes all this fuss about the Doctor being the last Time Lord, and how he longs for Gallifrey to return, yet he also makes it so all other Time Lords are evil and Gallifrey must not come back because if it does everything will go wrong!!!
So I doubt Russell will bring back Gallifrey permanently.
I know The End of Time doesn’t get a lot of love here (@BillFiler) but I actually really liked how Gallifrey was returning, and instead of being happy the Doctor grabs a gun. That was so shocking to me and I loved how it was turned on its head that Gallifrey went evil during the Time War, as that happens during wartime.
But yeah I really want Gallifrey back, for the storytelling possibilities, to finally get rid of the “Last of the Time Lords” moping, and maybe even bring some of our favourite characters back!
