I’m sure there’ll be some YouTube videos called WORST EPISODE YET! ANIMATED SLOP SERVED IN ABUNDANCE! a few hours after the episode drops, y’know, for balance. Don’t worry.
For me personally, as well as plot, the reality of the world in Devil’s Chord wasn’t adequately set up, built or explained for the imagination on display to impress as much as it could have.
Here I hope there is that absolute sheer bonkers out-there inventiveness which pushes the show into new ground and stretches its parameters, but which also makes perfect sense within the story told.
And these reviews do imply it manages that. Now of course, there were reviews of Devil’s Chord which were similar and which I ultimately disagreed with but, like I say, these read differently. These are talking about a LOT beyond the superficial and it’s encouraging.
I think those are the most positive reviews I’ve read about Doctor Who in over a decade.
I think it may help that this episode seems to be somewhat confined to the movie theatre, with just a looming larger threat. (I may be wrong, but that’s the vibe I get.) Whereas DC had a God taking music away from the entire world and they struggled to show the scale of that - the world being a devasted landscape was neat but didn’t land for me; I didn’t feel the connection between what Maestro had done and that end result.
I think compared to everything else he’s worn it looks less impressive is all.
I think it looks cool. Sort of thing I wish I could get away with colour wise.
I know we’ve been talking about Ncuti’s outfit, but I just want to take a minute to say Varada is absolutely killing it in that outfit! I love when Doctor Who does historical costumes!
Lux was the episode I was looking forward to the most so It’s nice to see it review so well. I find the rubber hose animation style very fascinating, and mixed reality stories aka Who Framed Roger Rabbit are always a spectacle to watch, so I am very hyped for this episode. Also, it has Alan Cumming in it, and who doesn’t like Alan Cumming.
Glad to see Lux is getting such positive Reviews, I will stay cautious for now but here is hope, I am going to love it
Rolled my eyes at that being under “The Bad” when it isn’t.
It just made me laugh tbh. I’m sure it’ll spawn about 70 posts on the review thread
“There’s a special surprise during the credits!”
I hope this story doesn’t just come off as packed with gimmicks. I fear it risks doing so. Jury’s out until Saturday. But I remain optimistic, and the reviews have been very positive so hey!
im surprised i havent seen any review that gave it a 3 or 3.5 stars.
I’m a 1950s fashion fan, so i will be judging all the dresses very hard. They better be swing or poodle skirts with suitable flounce
So the best since Heaven Sent? Uh oh…
The fact that a review calls it a bad thing means that seeing the Doctor crying is needed! The idea that male role models and heroes can’t cry is so deeply rooted in our collective subconscious that it needs a lot of work to change.
It also means they are just Nitpicking and Nitpicking usually starts only when something is really good, granted I will take those Reviews still with caution, but I can’t lie: It got me excited.
