The scariest story of them all:
Watch at your own peril!
The Shadow in the Glass is one of the few Who novels Iād read in isolation years ago before diving into the wilderness years books in order more recently. I loved it and was absolutely heartbroken at the ending.
Children of earth has already been said, so to throw out a more niche one: Cuckoo
3 Urban Explorers find torchwood threeās base, and get trapped with Billis and Weevils. Billis is somehow even more sadistic in this one than in a lot of his others, heās just toying with people all throughout, and I donāt think Iām ever going to forget The person getting crushed by the invisible lift
Big Finish Torchwood is rife with dark stories though, to name a few others:
Corpse Day was very nearly the main pick, but wanted to go a bit more niche. Itās a horrifying listen throughout, definitely recommend if youāre able to stomach it
Night of the Fendahl is also extremely dark, the entire plot revolving around Gwen being part of snuff film
Hostile Environment is a damning look at how society treats the homeless
And lastly, not as dark as the others, and not dark in the same way at all but Colin Alone is utterly heartbreaking and genuinely difficult to listen to at points
@JayPea - great post and some excellent examples of BFās darker stories. Their Torchwood range has grabbed me far more than the TV show ever did and continues to explore places that even Doctor Who fears to tread!
After reading that post, I might just have a BF Torchwood day. A bit of Bilis Manger for starters, I think ā¦
Canāt believe I forgot about this one. Easily the darkest Cyberman story thatās ever been written.
And then youāve got THAT revelationā¦ holy mother of God, that broke me.
Genuinely horriying.
Thereās a reason Lidster is one of my all-time favourite writers.
Main one that comes to mind atm is Deep Blue. I read it over a decade ago and Iāve forgotten most of plot but what stuck with me was how utterly Horrifying it was, and the dread as more and more people, including the main cast, got infected and started changing. Not to mention the massive body count, especially harrowing given itās set literally right after Warriors of the Deep. Like goddamn, can Five and his team get a damn break for once
If I remember correctly, āDeep Blueā is a Mark Morris book.
Pretty sure heās a horror writer by trade, which often shines through in most of his Doctor Who work too.
Given the target audience, these stories were deliciously dark. Kids need stories like this from time to time (and often handle them better than many adults give them credit).
Loving that series so much. Iāve only listened to āOnly the Goodā so far, but āMaster of Callousā is calling me.
Has anyone mentioned āTurn Leftā yet? Truly dark stuff, societal collapse and ending in suicide. Even though the original timeline is restored, itās still a deeply bleak piece of TV with a pessimistic view of humanity. Love it to bits!
In a similar vein, āDot and Bubbleā is equally cynical and pessimistic. Despite the bright colours and superficiality, itās utterly bleak. Where āTurn Leftā ends with a return to the norm, āDot and Bubbleā ends with a devastating loss for the Doctor. Unable to overcome such entrenched prejudice, heās sorely wounded. It cuts so deep!
I brought these two up already, but my reviews are now available to read so it makes them easier to discuss.
āThe Draconian Rageā is genuinely one of my favourite stories in the Benny range, but holy mother of Christ is it dark! Everyone is stabbing each other in the back, and a bunch of cultist loons believe the mind of their deceased leader is trapped within Bennyās headā¦ so they pick up a power drill, and thus begins one of the most horrifying sceens in BigFinish history!
Summing up why āCantusā is beyond disturbing is pretty easy.
The revelation re:Cybermats.
Genuinely horrifying.
The Draconian Rage is brilliant but eeeesh itās horrible. I listened to it again fairly recently and my main reaction was āI Donāt Like Thisā. Poor Benny give her a break pleaseee
I will add Full Fathom Five. David Collings is terrifying, as is the body-horror of this story
The Office of Never Was has a pretty dark ending.
Ianto basically condemns someone to starve to death alone and wipes his own memory of it. Really shows a darker side of Iantos character.
It saddens me that we didnāt hear more adventures with that incarnation - though given the brutal ending of āFull Fathom Fiveā, that would be impossible.
Collings was phenomenal throughout!
I think itās good that he didnāt get too much before he got spoiled. Also, I believe there is a short story with him
