As some of you know, my experience with Doctor Who is mostly only through reading the DW books and I really like it that way. I don’t plan to watch any of the “TV Shows” for the near future. Maybe someday, we’ll see…
But… I got thinking, Hmmmm, audiobooks??? That could be an avenue that I might want to eventually pursue…
So the question: Where do you get your audio content from? Buy it? Download something from the public domain? Other? I’d appreciate your ideas and input here!
I’m not an audiobook person, but your local library should have a slew of them that you can listen to digitally. This goes for non-Doctor Who audiobooks and Big Finish audioplays. The first 50 of the BF Main Range can also be listened to without charge on Spotify.
There are audiobooks and there are audio dramas - these are full cast plays mostly with cast from the TV. Predominantly, audio drama is produced by Big Finish and you can find all their catalogue on their website
The first 50 big finish main range stories are available on spotify for free, but if you want anything post 50 then you have to buy from the big finish site. Audiobooks wise, your local library should have some
My primary supplier of audiobooks is my local library system. If you’re looking for free audiobooks, definitely check them out. Also, while at your local library, ask if they have an Inter-library Loan program. My local system does and it’s used to request items that aren’t in the system’s catalog. Newer stuff is often purchased for the collection, while older stuff is often borrowed from libraries around the US that have a copy. That has been my primary source of access for Doctor Who anything.
When it comes to Doctor Who, Big Finish is the primary producer of full-cast audio dramas, while BBC Audio is the primary producer of single-narrator audiobooks. That said, Big Finish has done some single-narrator audiobooks or hybrid narration/drama stories. Hope this helps.
I’m not a big lover of audiobooks but I LOVE audio dramas, especially BF ones. I just buy direct, and IMO I love some of their recent stuff more than their older, it depends also on the format you like. The free Spotify ones are mostly all Classic Who format. I kinda prefer the near to an hour format in New Who and that’s most of their audios that aren’t Classic oriented. Honestly, if there’s a specific era you like or vibe, Doctor, Companion or side character just let us know and we can recommend!!
On the subject of BF just to let you know they’re separate from the BBC so they don’t get any funding besides purchases, so if you can I’d suggest buying direct as it means they’re getting supported. After all, ranges do sometimes end and it can and has been due to poor sales.
A lot of the free stories on spotify are also ones we’ve covered in Audio > Audio Club , so if you go for those, join in and let us know what you think!
