Also, just a general note, be aware that TGT has started adding badly upscaled screenshots using AI for certain stories. For the most part, they’re using ones from blu-rays but some people have noticed that the site has started using dodgy upscales for others, leading to some crappy screenshots of not great quality. I hope they revert to using the collection blu-rays, cos I like TGT and it’d be a shame for it to go downhill.
I did read this in their blog post about Joy to the World so I think it was just a problem with that story?
We had the gallery ready to go fairly quickly, but finding a suitable 4K version of the story to draw screen caps from proved abnormally, at least for the current day, elusive. So elusive in fact that we eventually caved and capped the story in ‘standard’ HD.
It’s been spotted elsewhere in other galleries. A good example seems to be The Time Warrior. Instead of the old DVD quality caps, they seem to have thrown caps through an AI upscaler along with the newest BBC logo… it’s possible they capped from iPlayer and upscaled them themselves, cos the iPlayer version is still very much DVD quality. Or they’ve capped directly from some of the classic series uploads on YouTube.
I don’t really know how to contact them. They have made cards for all classic Who, including different types for animated and telesnap, and for S01-10 and the Disney stuff. I believe that they are working on the 13th’s stuff.
The problem is, even if they were contactable, they’ve also incorporated other peoples’ artworks into their own. So then you’d likely have to contact those people too, to make sure any and all parties involved are happy.
Yeah, they are gorgeous, but getting all the permissions might be a hassle. And we definitely have to make sure we get it all right so we don’t get into trouble.
I could foresee a time, though, when TARDIS Guide has its own unique collection of “title cards” and graphics. I love the ‘homegrown hand-picked screenshot’ approach it currently has, but some day it’d be amazing if shauny found a designer to make some unique graphics to really set the site apart from everything else.
I love the TARDIS Guide artwork of 15 on the homepage.
Honestly, I’m fine with things being run through AI upscaling, just do some quality checking on them first, and fix up any issues introduced or redo any ones with issues. And set the settings in such a way that it doesn’t take too much in the way of liberties with the picture.
