I really like the ones where the writer and/or director are on the panel because you get more insight into the production. Planet of Fire is a fun one with director Fiona Cumming on there, there’s lovely reminiscing about time spent on Lanzarote including German nudists and a turtle thief (and Peter completely missing the point he has to put Kamelion out of everyone’s misery).

Where are these commentaries available, by the way? I’ve only ever seen the ones done for the Gatwa years, on iPlayer. Are the earlier ones on the Blurays or something?

All of the classic series DVDs have commentaries. Most of the modern series DVDs do too, although they aren’t on every episode of the Moffat or Chibnall years.

There is also Who Talk’s superb range of commentaries which initially started because The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear were rush-released without extras after their discovery. They’ve gone on to do a huge number of further stories - mainly classic, but the odd new series episode too.

Oh my goodness a whole type of commentary I was unfamiliar with. Once I’ve done the classic series ones this is somewhere for me to go.
For the new series, watching both the web commentaries and DVD commentaries is a serious time investment but they are worth it. In my humble opinion (and that of Toby Hadoke!) the RTD1 commentaries are generally speaking the best ones.

Behind the Sofa (the Collection commentaries) can be quite hit and miss, but Davison, Fielding and Sutton are usually good value. The most recent one for The Caves of Androzani was great – especially with Colin getting a little emotional thinking back to the regeneration, whilst Peter was joking around for the entire time

Sleaze? Please don’t say he’s as creepy about Karen and Jenna as RTD is about Tovey? Not sure if I can handle another showrunner drooling over an actor, creepily treating them like they’re just a piece of meat.

See this always unnerves me a bit. I get it, Karen and Clara are stunning, breathtaking even — and I also get that that can be distracting in a space where you’re encouraged to “just keep talking, whatever’s on your mind.”
But they’re actors working! Maybe keep those comments in your head, Moffat. (keep your stupid comments in your pocket.)

The Fires of Pompeii DVD commentary today, and MY WORD is this one a lot of fun. I mean, of course it is, because it’s David and Catherine (and Tracie Simpson). Highlights include inadvertently insulting a supporting actor’s hair, discussion of whether the Doctor’s real name could be Keith, an anecdote regarding Phil Collinson screaming ‘like a four-year-old girl’, reminiscence of the extras going bra-less (quote DT, ‘swing low, sweet chariot’), the phrase ‘manky stuff pouring out your shnorpuss’, a wholesome little shout-out to Peter Capaldi’s Oscar win, and a lengthy exegesis on the delicacy of goat with lard.
Lowlights include a joke about all Italians running ice cream shops, and some scarily frequent attempts at stereotypical, exaggerated Japanese accents(!?) Mad to think what passed for humour even less than 20 years ago, and that even Saint David has said the odd thing that would more than raise some cancel-culture eyebrows today. Really unfortunate, but the rest of the commentary is a real riot.
