A bit of a hard break in the story after so much action, I think this would potentially be better if you were reading month to month or binging it all, but having taken a break just before this it doesn’t work quite as well.
Also yet again, Cindy hasn’t really gotten the chance to do all that much since joining the TARDIS. Here she falls in love with a guy, but that’s kind of all she gets to do in this story which is a real shame.
The callbacks to The Singer Not the Song were appreciated though, it’s always nice to see stories lead from one to the other, here in a weird out of order sort of way.
It’s probably the weakest music/sound based story from the 10th doctor comics so far, a low 6, but still a 6.
Music Man - 7/10
Ah, so they’re doing the 11th Doctor comics thing again where one story is apparently split into two?
This story is definitely the stronger part, the characterisation you get for 10 and Gabby is great here, especially with Gabby’s character growth. and I’m excited to see how that continues going forward.
Here at least not having Cindy do anything kind of works, in that it’s setting up conflict between her and Gabby going forward which I’m excited to see.
That all said the way they beat the monster (ignoring the sacrifice) is very much just kind of ‘meh’ to me. With a stronger antagonist this story could be great, but as it is, it’s fine.
How many of these music-based stories have Titan put out now? It’s getting a bit old even if I love the connections to Wupatki and the earlier stories. It’s nice to be in New Orleans again and see Gabby’s new powers in action. Cindy gets nothing to do and I still don’t like her. Lots of technobabble in this and it lost me a bit at the end. The art style is nice.
So I didn’t realise until later on that Music Man was the second part of The Jazz Monster and that it’s considered its own story (for whatever reason), so I sort of reviewed it already as part of The Jazz Monster.
A San Diego Comic-Con exclusive issue that ties into Titans 10th, 11th and 12th Doctor runs. It’s essentially a couple of pages with each of the three Doctors in short and pointless scenes. The biggest takeaways are Eleven and Alice discussing Hamilton the Musical and Twelve visiting a comics convention. Completely inessential.
Old Girl
It’s a slow first issue but a very intriguing second issue and a superb cliffhanger. It’s a bit weird that this is just the first two chapters of this epic multi-chapter story and that we’ll have to wait until the next volume to find out how it all ends!
Jazz Monster and music man: no idea where these split. The ending was touching, but the conceptual music beings are getting really repetitive.
The long con: some nice little scenes from the different doctors, and fun to read a second time after you get to the ending.
Old girl: now, this is where it gets interesting! While it’s not the whole story yet, the cliffhanger is very mean/therefore good, and it’s got a strong start. I’m very interested to see where it’s going with sutekh and the osirians(especially considering this is pre-emptive of death),as well as with Gallifrey.
