This is a very strange story. It’s violent, tragic and very, very unlike Doctor Who. There is literally no way of imagining it being part of Season 18 (or any other Fourth Doctor season for that matter - not even the Hinchcliffe years).
End of the Line is sort of Escape from New York/Mad Max style story where the Doctor stumbles aboard a subway train system inhabited by cannibals. He is rescued by a blond ninja woman and helps her group of ‘Angels’ take control of a train so they can escape the closed environment of the city into the ‘countryside’.
The Doctor sets them on their way and escapes back to the TARDIS but then discovers that the ‘countryside’ is a radioactive wasteland and the train never arrives anyway!
It’s a hugely depressing, violent story. The big bad boss of the cannibals is fried by electrocution and then eaten by his own gang! The cannibals are grotesque. It’s a story where the imagery is echoing what we’ve seen already in this strip in the last story, The Deal and echoes of the outsiders in City of the Damned.
The blond ninja woman is almost identical to the blond woman the Doctor briefly allies with in Dogs of Doom.
Weirdly, it’s actually a pretty good, if depressing story. It’s in two parts which gives it time to breath and the setting is effectively depicted. This would never get past quality control nowadays but it’s an interesting curio at least.
Oh I was fully invested in this I love an apocalyptic story
I can see how others would like this, but it did not work for me. It felt a bit off and not Doctor Who enough for me.
This one has a great setting and atmosphere, though it’s a bit disappointing that we’re mostly underground and don’t explore the polluted surface more. The cannibal mutants are like Mad Max characters, and the Guardian Angels are kind of wasted. I love, though, how the Doctor’s scarf turns out to be a liability for once!
7/10 = Good!
