The Ninth Doctor meets the Pertwee era! With kaiju! And old friends! And loads of action! So much that there’s almost no plot!
Official Secrets = 6/10
Official Secrets has the right ingredients for a fun Doctor Who adventure—UNIT, government conspiracies, a shady corporation, and kaiju-level destruction—but it doesn’t quite bring them together in a satisfying way. The story feels rushed, the antagonists are underdeveloped, and the action takes precedence over meaningful character moments. Still, there are flashes of fun, particularly with the Brigadier’s return and Harry’s standout moment. A decent but forgettable attempt at merging classic and modern Doctor Who sensibilities.
During this period, a short story was published on the site meant to introduce Tara and the Titan team. It has just been published on the guide, and you can read it for free!
It is nothing special but a fun read. Interesting that they chose to have the ninth Doctor in a television setting again.
Slaver’s Song was okay. A bit of a wasted setting and not very interesting aliens, but I liked how it developed Jack’s past a bit.
6/10
A decent adventure that hints at deeper themes but never fully explores them, Slaver’s Song is ultimately a serviceable story with strong character moments for Jack and some tension among the TARDIS crew. However, its historical setting feels underused, and its alien slavery subplot is too familiar to stand out. It’s an okay read that delivers just enough intrigue to keep you hooked for the next issue.
Well, Christmas Special was barely Christmassy and not very special. Nice to meet a returning face. It did nothing to build on Tara as a character though. Fine and forgettable.
5/10
A harmless, festive-themed diversion that delivers a bit of holiday cheer but nothing particularly memorable. While it’s nice to see the Ninth Doctor finally get a Christmas story, the lack of real stakes, sidelined companions, and the absence of any lasting impact make it an easily skippable entry in the Titan comics run. Fun for the moment, but ultimately forgettable.
Agree with everyone’s thoughts on Official Secrets and Slaver’s Song. Not my favourites. I especially thought Harry was quite out of character in Offical Secrets. Far to too gung-ho and ready to use force and violence!
There’s a lot to like about this story, a Brig era unit story involving a villain doing some political scheming. Harry, Benton, The Brig, refererences to the UNIT dating controversy and UNIT’s change of name in the revival. Giant Monsters!
But overall, I don’t know, this story felt somewhat forgettable, and the connections back to the previous story kind of felt tacked on. In fact one of the references to said story doesn’t make sense in context The Doctor saying they were sent here thanks to Rose’s boyfriend an her remarking that “he’s not my boyfriend”, even though part of the point of that story was that Rose and Jack weren’t meant to know that Mickey was there.
The teases for the next story, a new companion and Jack’s backstory, seem interesting… but that’s the last two pages, and cant’ really give it credit for that.
So yeah, overall a story that I did really enjoy, but I think I think I should’ve enjoyed more than I did.
I mean like, that was fine, but there’s not really anything to hook you. You’d think that the slavers might react to another person of colour in a place where they’re ‘gathering slaves’, but Tara’s presence, at least for now, seems to be mostly there for Rose to get jealous at.
Jack and Rose’s story in this issue seems to just be even more setup fro future events, which promises to be interesting, but historically hasn’t been. So the main thing to really focus on here is Tara and Nine’s story which is… fine.
The idea of mer-creatures helping slaves because they were also slaves, and then their slavers coming back to help them is neat, but it’s just a bit too fast paced, I think a little less action, a little more talking would do this story a world of good, maybe another issue to work with?
As it is, this story is fine, nothing horrible, but nothing to write home about at all.
