Twelve says ACAB and I’m here for it

The Twist - 8/10 (Spoilers)

Full on Punk 12, the best art I’ve seen in a Titan Comic, just such a fun setting, all in all I’m loving this.

I’m always a fan of this characterisation for Twelve, where he does just give that ‘old punk’ vibe, so putting him into a setting like this one to really bring that out is just brilliant. I especially love the new companion we get here, a punk rocker from the future just works so well for Twelve, especially her being a musician he’s a big fan of, but just early in her career.

I also quite like the twist we get here on the ‘evil human colonialists’ story we often see. It’s still very much a story with those vibes, but the fact that the foxkin weren’t the original settlers but came with the humans, the humans having died, and then the humans here now being genetic recreations by the foxkin, it adds another layer to the story that makes it stand out all the more.

The ending does feel a little rushed, but I think for this kind of story and setting it works well for me. On the one hand, making peace with a single speech doesn’t feel the most realistic, but on the other, the twist is a setting with a vibrant and widespread punk scene, and with how that scene is so accepting of minorities and such, I think it does work here.

Also the art! This is some of my favourite art I’ve seen in a titan book, while I like the art in other Doctor Who comics it can, at least for me, often feel either too comic-y, ending up trading some of the realism you get with who, or the character’s likenesses, of trying to be too real, losing the sense of motion and action from a comic. This art perfectly splits that down the middle, being a bit more realistic but keeping that comic book charm and I absolutely adore it.

The twist: this one is really amazing, it’s just such a good story for Twelve, and the art is breathtaking
Playing house: I love the conceptual stuff of a dying TARDIS and it’s really beautifully drawn again

The 12th Doc comics keep on delivering. The Twist is a fun, traditional murder mystery on a human colony. I love the art style! Hattie is a fun new companion, though she doesn’t leave much of an impression here. The setting is great and the Foxkin are really interesting. I also like the Punk Twelve aesthetic and the slightly different spin on classic tropes, even if the resolution is pretty predictable.

Summarised review (spoilers) = 8/10

Set against the backdrop of a gritty, music-fuelled human colony, Peter Capaldi’s punk-inspired Twelfth Doctor is perfectly at home. His dynamic with Hattie, a bassist in a local band, adds charm and energy to the story, positioning her as a strong potential companion.

Beginning as a murder investigation, the narrative evolves into a mix of classic Doctor Who elements like secret tunnels, xenophobic tensions, and misunderstood monsters. While engaging, the plot feels predictable at times, relying on well-worn story beats.

The humanoid fox-like Foxkin are visually striking and add depth to their hidden existence and connection to humanity. However, their motivations and conflict echo familiar narratives, limiting their originality.

The art is a standout feature, vividly depicting everything from moody concert venues to neon-lit futuristic cityscapes. The underground tunnels add suspense, enhancing the story’s tone and aesthetic appeal.

The resolution follows a classic Doctor Who formula of empathy and coexistence. Jakob’s villainy is revealed as expected, but Hattie’s invitation to travel with the Doctor teases an exciting future for the Twelfth Doctor in Titan Comics.

Playing House has a slightly different vibe. I like the setting of the maze-like house and the ghostly Spyrillites. Found the family a bit unnecessary. Hattie doesn’t get a lot to do and is already dropped back home at the end, which is a pity.

Summarised review (spoilers) = 7/10

The labyrinthine, ever-shifting manor house steals the show, blending suspense and mystery with a clever Doctor Who twist. Its eerie, collapsing state and connection to a dying TARDIS create an engaging backdrop reminiscent of the series’ creepier episodes.

The Twelfth Doctor is in his element, navigating the dangers with sharp wit and rebellious charm. His mix of chaos and brilliance keeps the story lively, though it sometimes overshadows other characters.

These artron-energy-feeding Spyrillites are a neat concept, tying ghost stories to time travel. However, their role feels secondary, serving more as atmospheric set pieces than as integral to the plot.

Despite her strong introduction in The Twist, Hattie feels sidelined in this story, with limited development or agency. Her abrupt departure at the end undermines her potential as a companion, leaving her arc unfulfilled.

The intriguing premise of a dying TARDIS threatening Earth is resolved too quickly, diminishing the high stakes. While the family adds a human element, their roles are minimal, failing to leave a lasting impact on the story.

I found this anthology to be pretty good. I love the Twelfth Doctor, so I hope that the stories are actually good, and I am not overly biased.

The Twist

The story seemed pretty good. It was nice that the Twelfth Doctor got to do some rock’n roll. The story reminded me somewhat of Fifteenth Doctor story Dot and Bubble, with its emphasis on how one treats the alien and the stranger.

Playing House

Although perhaps the story was not revolutionary, I thought that the art was lovely, and that the story was a good fit for the comic book medium.

The Twist was another great story! 12 second year is so much better than 10 and 11! I like the new companion and how she interacts with the Doctor. I also like an the monster is not the evil story.

The other story did not click as much with me. I got confused from time to time and it just was not for me.

The art was good in the whole book!

Whoops, realised I never reviewed Playing House

Playing House - 6/10 (Spoilers)

Heads up, this review is written 2 or so weeks after reading the story, so memory of it may not be the best.

This story was fine. Nothing standout good, nothing standout bad, just fine.

There’s some ideas in here that I really loved, a haunted house turning out to be a dying TARDIS bought at a yard sale, or The Doctor’s new punk companion, but as for the actual execution… like I said before, nothing standout.

The artstyle here is fine too, but after the beauty that was The Twist, it’s a definite step down. It’s also a shame that Hattie ended up being a one-time companion, she’s a really interesting character that would’ve been great to explore more, but she’s dropped back on The Twist at the end of the story.

Still, it’s nice to see her and Twelve rocking out at the start of the adventure.

The other characters we’re introduced to here were just kinda there. They’re side-characters that felt like side characters, so there’s not much to say about them.

Overall, like I said up top. It’s fine.
