Changes are coming to Book Club, and Book Club Extra?!

Hello fellow Doctor Who Prose enthusiasts!

We’re making a couple changes to how Book Club will function, so this post is to help explain the changes, how we’ll transition, and get your thoughts on what to do for Book Club Extra!

Firstly, the big change, Book Club is moving from set dates, to being once every two weeks. The current format alternates between NSAs on the 1st of every month and VNAs on the 15th, this will still be happening. The move to set days keeps the gap roughly the same, but brings it more in line with our other clubs, and ensures there’ll be no overlap with two club posts on the same day

Secondly, a small change, while Shauny’s been in charge of handling (handles-ing?) the book club previously, in order to take a bit of the weight off his hands, I’ll be taking over (i.e. if anything goes wrong, blame me from now on).

And Thirdly, another big one. While book club is a great way to experience Doctor Who Prose, there’s more to prose than just books… Book Club Extra will be delving into Doctor Who Short Story collections, reading one short every two weeks, alternating with the regular Book Club. I do need a bit of help though, help in deciding what short story collection we’ll start reading first. I’ve got a few ideas, but it’s up to you to vote for what you want to read/discuss the most!

  • The Adventures Before
  • Origin Stories
  • Adventures In Lockdown
  • Star Tales
  • The Day She Saved The Doctor
  • Tales of Terror
  • Myths and Legends
  • The American Adventures
  • The Target Storybook
  • The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who
  • 15 Doctors, 15 Stories

So, how will this affect the schedule?

This month’s regular book club will be entirely unaffected, we’ve already had the NSA on the 1st, and we’ll still have a VNA on the 15th. After that however the new schedule will start with the first Book Club Extra on July the 27th

i.e.

  • July 15th - Book Club (VNA) - Iceberg
  • July 27th - Book Club Extra - Short Story 1
  • August 3rd - Book Club (NSA) - Wishing Well
  • August 10th - Book Club Extra - Short Story 2
  • August 17th - Book Club (VNA) - Blood Heat
  • August 24th - Book Club Extra - Short Story 3

and so on

I really like this change! It will be fun to highlight short stories here!

Included the dates there partly to help with doing that lmao

We had also talked at one point about potentially adding another series into the Book Club. I don’t remember where, but I think there has been possible talk of integrating the VMAs when we reached that point in VNAs. Is that still something people want to do?

@Dragonwitch here you go :partying_face:

Great question, not too sure, when we get a bit closer to those releases, we can do a poll maybe?

I think that this is a good way of doing it!

Short Trips books? Short Trips books, anyone? :backhand_index_pointing_right: :backhand_index_pointing_left:

(I understand this probably because they aren’t in print but the BBC ones at least are pretty cheap…)

Yeah, went for the more recent things because they’re pretty easily accessible

By my unedited schedule, we’d be starting the VMAs in May 2026 after All-Consuming Fire.

I love the idea of adding short stories - the only collection I’ve read is Adventures in Lockdown. I won’t reach any of these books for some time (still hoping to reach the Third Doctor at the same time the TV Club does, lol). With the increased interest I’ve seen in the novelisations, would there be any interest in adding those at some point, perhaps as a periodic Extra?

This is great! Will help me catch up to the VNA’s in the book club

There’s not any plans currently in doing those as part of the clubs, but if there’s enough vocal interest we can consider it

Oh, I totally get it. There’s so much great content…I want to join every Club and experience it all, right now. Thanks for running this one, by the way!

Don’t thank me yet, it’s still Shauny for now!

I’ve voted for the collections I have just bought or was thinking about reading sometime soon.

That said, I don’t know when I’ll read them because I’ve decided I’m going to plough through the rest of Virgin’s Benny vs the Gods arc before I read anything else. I mean it’s only about 25 years since I bought them…

Very lovely change, maybe it’ll get me to read more of the VNAs (I am not sure if I really want to commit to the 10 NSAs anytime soon, because if I do any of them, I should do all of them :sob:). Very pleased to see that we will get a Club for Short Stories, voted for the Target Storybook, because that’s a good chunk of Stories, and I am already on the last Story, so no new reading for the Club required! Also voted for Adventures in Lockdown, because I have read it and again no further reading required!!

Yesss please :backhand_index_pointing_right: :backhand_index_pointing_left: maybe some day we can get that as an Extra too!

Love that the two I threw on the list literally as I was making this post because I remembered they exist and are popular are the two leading the poll

Oh short stories that’s really nice! Probably will finally get me into book club since NSAs and VNAs aren’t really on my immediate reading lists but I can squeeze in some short stories much easier
