I’ve heard tons of War Master sets and they’re just superb honestly. They just work, there are Doctor cameos but not many. I heard the first two Missy sets upon release and vaguely remember them, I just started S3 today. I’m less a fan, it’s okay but its not like exceptional like how The War Master is!

I am not that interested in the Time War and will probably not listen to The War Master. I have been a bit interested in the Missy sets.

In the Master! box-sets which are my favourite of the individual Master series I’ve heard it is mainly done by pitching the Goo-snake Master against Vienna Salvatori which works really well. Chase Masterson and Eric Roberts have fantastic chemistry together so that carries it some of the way.
Slight spoiler for Master! Planet Doom I was a bit underwhelmed whan McGann showed up - though admittedly it was as an Axon copy so it was at least original.
I know I go against the grain here when I say that it doesn’t really work that well in the War Master series (listened to five series of that) when the Doctor isn’t there.
Got to get around to Missy at some point…

Generally they just have their own adventures. Think of it like a twisted version of The Doctor. In the Missy series, it’s mainly her having her own adventures, but with her usual “psychotic” nature shining through.
A good way to think of it is a normal Doctor adventure but tilted at 45 degrees, and most of the time there isn’t a happy ending.

Haha! Finally something I have done before both of you! I’ve listened to all Missy sets, and honestly, they vary in quality. At best, they’re loads of fun with mischief and mayhem, and at worst they’re just a Doctor Who story with Missy replacing the Doctor. And the Monk is in some of the stories too, and those are loads of fun!

Wonder where this series will land tonally. Missy is more of a comedy and the things she does are more cartoonishly evil. On the other hand, the War Master is more of a drama and he comes through as a genuine sociopath.
The Spy Master is one of the more camp incarnations but he shows the doctor some real genuine hatred so I think it could go either way.

Many (most?) of the War Master audios aren’t specifically in the Time War, they are just him having dastardly fun around the universe, with a slight reference to the ongoing Time War which is not part of the story (I’m mostly thinking of Master of Callous)
