No doubt there will be lots of brickbats thrown at this book but when I read it, way back in the distant past, I remember rather enjoying it. I definitely remember liking the bits set in Victorian London and quite enjoyed William Blake as a pseudo-companion. Who knows what I would think about it now but I know it ranks higher than other NAs for me.

I don’t remember much from this story, but I do remember it had the worst prose from any published book I’ve ever read…
I can see why people dislike this, but I’ve genuinely had a great time with it! It is quite meandering and doesn’t wrap up perfectly, and the Doctor is somewhat inconsequential in the end, but I love the array of ideas and the good vs evil, religious themes, Gallifreyan lore we get.
Yay! I’ve found someone else who doesn’t think The Pit is the worst thing committed to the NA range!!! Friends for life!!
i don’t think this book was that bad? maybe only because getting my first pair of glasses has made reading actually enjoyable
I finished it.
Did the author just have several unfinished books sitting around that he decided to toss together into one book or something?
The Blake bits were good. Maybe he could have fleshed those out into a book…
I havnt read The Pit, but I came here to say that as somebody who didn’t care about Game of Thrones until everybody said it was garbage (when I promptly binged it), and is currently on Love and War, that I am unreasonably hyped for The Pit.

Too many ideas but took all the ideas and took all the least interesting parts out it in a blender the pit is born
While five-star ratings offer more nuance than a binary ‘good’ or ‘bad’ verdict, it’s still rather difficult explaining the differences between a one-star rating for Transit and a one-star rating for The Pit. The former feels lazy, gratuitous, and more interested in worldbuilding a setting that serves to provide more shock content and whose narrative potential is consistently squandered at nearly every conceivable point. The latter is, perhaps, the single most boring novel in this range so far with the shape of some potentially decent ideas remaining hollow and unfulfilled as they jostle for space in a poorly paced, weakly written, and altogether disjointed novel.
The only good thing to come from this book is its foundational role in establishing the Yssgaroth and that corner of Doctor Who lore. Everything else was pedestrian at best, and that pains me to say; I never enjoy disliking Doctor Who and always want to have a good time with every story I experience, but, despite my rather swift completion of it, The Pit was such a slog to endure that any enjoyment I may have had was quick to atrophy. As with Transit, a 2/10 still feels too kind.
