Gareth Roberts is a terrible person but unfortunately The Highest Science is not a terrible book.
I think it was the YouTuber DAVIS (who consistently makes great points) who said that, at least in the novels, Gareth Roberts emulated Douglas Adams the best and I find it hard to disagree.
Genuinely funny with a great personality, uses Benny much better than Transit and introduced some fantastic lore elements, especially with the brilliant Chelonians.
It is somewhat slow at points and kind of just ends without much of a pay-off but it’s is by far the best of this initial Benny Trilogy.
I thought it was just kinda ‘okay’. 7 and Benny made this much more enjoyable in the End. Like what we got Story wise is pretty fine, there are some interesting Ideas, but I don’t think any of them are explored in a meaningful or interesting Manner. And the Pace does feel off at times. Still the Interactions save this one for me and at the end of the Day it’s kinda pretty average.
As for its Writer, I can only echo what @Speechless already stated, terrible Guy.
I know that back in the day this was a really highly regarded NA.
Nowadays (probably partly due to the writer) it’s not as controversial an opinion not to like it, but I’ve got to say I found this one really boring. None of the side characters were interesting, the plot moves at a glacial pace, none of the jokes landed for me and it’s too mean-spirited to be fun. Not a favourite at all.
