I have fond memories of Shadowmind. I remember, at the time, it wasn’t particularly well received but I found it an easy, enjoyable read. A lot of the New Adventures around this time were trying really hard to be weighty, gritty and grown up but Christopher Bulis (an unfairly maligned author, in my opinion) just seemed to want to write a pacy, fun read.

That said, I read this around 30 years ago so my memories are probably not to be trusted.

I tried reading this years ago and didn’t finish it, which is unsurprising considering my more recent experiences with the omnipresent Christopher Bulis have been… unpleasant.

There was something about slugs, bombs that looked like hard boiled sweets and another writer forcing in a way to get Ace naked, so I’m not particularly disappointed I never finished this one.

I read this one a few months ago. Did not have fun. I don’t think it was actively bad, it was just so, so boring…

I’ve been busy fixing up the New Adventures on Hardcover (like Goodreads, but less 2005 and not owned by Amazon), and something I learned about this book is that the cover art was done by the author! The only other instances of this I know of are Jim Mortimore doing the cover art for Lucifer Rising and Lawrence Burton (who is primarily an artist rather than a writer) doing the cover art for his own Faction Paradox novels Against Nature and Inward Collapse.

This possibly goes some way to explaining why the faces of Benny and whoever that is look a bit wonky – but it’s mighty impressive nonetheless. And makes Jim Mortimore look even more impressive, as if the man needed it.

What experiences were these!

I read The Eye of the Giant on a whim and detested it

Oh. I thought he had run over your cat or some such.

I find Bullis stories tend to be just fine safe who but not particularly exciting

No, I forgave him for running over my cat.

A bad book on the other hand? Monstrous.

I’ve always enjoyed Bulis’s books - except Twilight of the Gods; that one is just boring!
