I can’t lie, I didn’t get very far into this one; Gary Russell wasn’t a very strong writer of prose back in the day, and based on his disappointing novelisation of The Star Beast, he still isn’t. I won’t rate it because I barely got a third of the way through, but I did not enjoy what I did read of this.
I’ll admit that I am a sucker for the world of Peladon.
And to once more have a whodunnit where you aren’t quite sure if the Ice Warriors are goodies or baddies is, for me, a delight. And we get a deeper insight in Ice Warrior culture through Benny’s eyes and her expertise.
It’s well-written and explores Peladon in a good way. The Diadem is a good plot device, and I like how the ol’ team is split up with each their own storyline going on.
I would say it rates between 3,5 and 4 for me, and then I tend to lean towards the higher score.
Can’t say I remember much about Legacy. I believe I went in with high hopes - Ice Warriors, Peladon, sign me up! Sometimes when you go in with high hopes, even a good book can be a disappointment. I know I felt it was a letdown, but I don’t really know if it was because it was mediocre, or if I just wanted more from it than I got.
For the first time with a VNA Im really struggling to actually express my thoughts on this one. I enjoyed it, but there was just to much to make me rate it any more than average. The Doctor’s weird racism twords the Ice Warriors (who at least as a scociety Im pretty sure have been good more than villans at this point), the fact The Doctor solved everything by meeting someone who claimed to be a close friend he had never seen before (your a time traveler Merlin!).
Unfortunately none come to mind right now, but there were also a fair few moments where I had to remind myself Gereth Roberts didnt right this. I would blame it on the times… if reading other VNAs was like this. I dont want to insinuate anything about the author, but it was a problem.
