We’ve talked a bit about these all over the place but I don’t think we actually have a real thread for them! And I want one because I’ve decided that I’m going to jump into this range (and finally listen to Goth Opera). I listened to The Last Day recently and realised I know little to nothing about Roz and Chris who were just so fun, and my friend who’s reading the VNAs set me on a quest to listen to all their audios to report back which ones are good.
Anyway. The Novel Adaptations! Which ones do you like? Which books would you love to see get an audio adaptation? Personally after Goth Opera, I’m holding out for Blood Harvest
I just started relistening to Love and War this morning and if I’m honest I wasn’t giving it proper attention last time I listened so I am happy to be revisiting it
I’ve only listened to The Romance of Crime so far (which I enjoyed), and I do have the other Romana ones as well, but haven’t gotten around to them yet. I’m planning to do those close to reading the books as soon as I feel like reading more again, I want to see how they compare. This whole range is very interesting to me, I love that they’ve made these stories for a different medium
I absolutely adore Love and War – I love the original book but the audio especially is one of my comfort listens. Maire Man Finn my beloved <3 she’s an Irish lesbian Dalek Killer and she’s so cool
I’ve also listened to Cold Fusion (haven’t read the book yet, didn’t love how Nyssa and Tegan were written but the ending was fantastic) and currently listening to Nightshade (good stuff!)
I’ve heard Cold Fusion, Damaged Goods, The Romance of Crime, The English Way of Death, Nightshade and Goth Opera. They’ve all been pretty good, Gareth Roberts can be an annoyingly good writer when he wants to be
I’ve listened to Nightshade, Love and War, Theatre of War and Original Sin. I thought they were all great, and it was really interesting to see the changes from one medium to another, as I’d read 3/4 of the books already.
It’s such an underrated range honestly I would love if they continue the range as i genuinely have no issue with any of the stories so far just wish there was some 6th doctor ones in the range
I think it’s just different rights holders getting in the way of that but I’m surprised they didn’t adapt dying days it being the last virgin book and only 8th doctor one
Love and War: I’ll be honest. I don’t think I still 100% understand this story. The audio starts very very slowly, but by the end barrels into you like a train crash and hurts just as much. I adore Benny, and I love her relationships with Ace and the Doctor. Most of the side characters are excellent, especially Maire.
But Ace and Jan… no. I just can’t buy it. I get why the relationship is important to the story but it’s like Ace gets a bit flustered around him and now they’re wildly in love? Can’t quite put my finger on it but I just found that fell so flat for me.
This is pretty much my only problem with this story. In the book, their relationship is fleshed out more, but it still felt very unrealistic to me. [1]
I also headcanon Ace as gay, which is the other reason I don’t like this romance ↩︎
I’d love to see some novel adaptations for the EDA’s but I don’t think that’ll ever happen coz of rights issues
But an Alien Bodies adaptation would go so hard
So in the Sarah Jane smith range there’s a character who pops up in multiple stories called Ellie Martin in the original concept of the character was gonna be Samantha jones from the EDA novels but when Liz found out she was another companion she was like could we not have multiple companions in the series please like 1 2 3 all eyes on me vibes
They technically do make Ellie a companion to the valyard in the unbound stories which adds more to her originally being Sam WE COULD HAVE HAD SAM N THE VALYARD
But yeah if I where to choose a story from the edas to adapt it would be vampire science with Kate orman coming to big finish writing the dead star if they got her to adapt vampire science it could be iconic and a good intro to that range of books
