Big Finish: The Companion Chronicles

While watching Season 7, I’m really enjoying the character of Liz, but I feel like she’s not getting enough time to shine.

Does anyone recommend her Companion Chronicles for more Liz?

Liz’s CCs are great. I haven’t heard them all but The Last Post is good and I remember enjoying The Blue Tooth too.

What are The Companion Chronicles actually like?

I’ve never listened to one before.

As far as I know, they’re similar to Short Trips.

Not quite and they vary a bit. They are more audiobook like in that they are centred around one narrator - usually a companion - but they have one other actor playing a significant guest role. Some are directly two-hander plays so are, technically full-cast (Solitaire, for example). Some use people like Lisa Bowerman (who directs a lot of them) as a third voice to expand the cast a bit and some use people like Purves and Hines to ‘play’ the First or Second Doctor with their rather good impressions. The Oliver Harper trilogy I recently finished often felt more full cast than it actually was due to using combination of these things.

Thank you for the help!

I’m now considering that Liz Shaw bundle…

To get a first taste of what the companion chronicles are like, I’d recommend The Rocket Men.

Old Soldiers if you are in a Third Doctor mood. Not a Liz chronicle, but kind of a Liz era chronicle.

I’m such a fake fan and have only listened to a handful of CCs - embarrassing, really, for someone who claims to love Doccy Whos for the Companions rather than the titular character.

The good news though, is that I own basically all of them, and I need my next payday to happen so I can complete my MR collection, and I’m a bit burned out on the 4DAs (what can I say? I miss Leela :frowning: )

All that waffle to say, starting a CC run  And we’re starting with Vicki <3

I’ve enjoyed a lot of the CCs I’ve heard, the Oliver Harper trilogy is great as is House Sara

Frostfire: I enjoyed the framing device of this one. I thought it started very strong but got weaker as it went on. Still enjoyed it though, it’s good to hear Vicki later in her life

Fear of the Daleks: snooze tbh… it was fine. Zoe is always cute. But not cute enough to make this fun

The Blue Tooth: Liz!!! Shaw!!! Do I even need to explain how much I love her  yeah we’re winning now, this one was great And Liz’s friend being converted was genuinely horrifying

I made another tierlist, go wild

I need to listen to BTUA again because it’s been a few years and that rating could be higher.

The Beautiful People: Lalla Ward reading anything is a delight. The core message of this one - that people should be different and the world is better for it - is a good one, but I felt the repeated and constant ‘look how FAT these people are! Aren’t FAT PEOPLE awful?’ was overdone to the point of being uncomfortable, even if it was the villain being wrong to say so

It’s been a while since I listened to that one but I remember that the one main fat character being characterized as lazy and gluttonous (and Romana describing her body as disgusting to look at) made me uncomfortable

I spent way more time dragging the images into the tierlist than this shitty joke was actually worth

(also I never write reviews but one day I’m going to get around to writing this one because there is no other Doctor Who story that I feel so conflicted about)
