Big Finish: The Audio Novels

Has anyone delved into the short-lived Audio Novels range? I highly enjoyed Terror of the Master (originally exclusive to the Masterful Special Edition), but only made it partway through Scourge of the Cybermen. I’ve got Prisoners of London and Box of Terrors, but haven’t gotten around to them yet. Are there any standouts, or ones to avoid?

Box of Terrors was an excellent surprise. Culshaw is fantastic, of course. This is the only audio novel I’ve heard so far.

It’s a shame to hear Scourge of the Cybermen didn’t hold your interest. I was considering picking that one up during the current sale.

I think it was more I ended listening to various other stuff in and around listening to Scourge. Don’t let that stop you from picking it up. Terror of the Master (which was originally included in the Masterful special edition and later given its own release) was excellent. It was read by Culshaw, but because his Third Doctor, Brigadier and Delgado Master were so good, it felt closer to an audio drama than audiobook.

Honestly, that’s how Box of Terrors feels, too. It’s fun to have Three and Four interact, and the two Sarahs are a nice touch.

I’ve only heard Terror of the Master and Box of Terrors but thought both were decent enough to think I should try the others. But they’re not a priority over the full cast ranges I follow and so I’m in no rush to get round to them.

I think I’d plump for the Twelfth Doctor one where Tania from Stranded pops up first as that’s a character I’m familiar with and I haven’t really gone for many Twelfth Doctor stories outside of the TV show.

I was sceptical about the format but Terror of the Master came with the Masterful boxset and I was pleasantly surprised that it worked for me. I’m not an audiobook sort of person but these stories not existing any other way means that if I want to experience them, I need to be “read at” (which is how I always thought of audiobooks, even though I now realise that isn’t always the case).

Revitalizing this topic a bit as we’ve had a lot of new people since the last comment. What are people’s thoughts on these? I’m eying the Matthew Waterhouse-penned Watchers as a possible future purchase.

Buy Emancipation of the Daleks, it’s the best audio novel they’ve done. I did enjoy Watchers though

I do already have Emancipation, along with Scourge, Prisoners of London and Box of Terrors. And I’m not in a rush to get more, just putting out feelers.

I vastly preferred Watchers to Prisoners of London, if that’s anything to go by

Scourge of the Cybermen is my favourite of the series. The Audio Novels in general is a great series though I wish Big Finish would shake up the Doctors featured for future releases as so far it’s just been Three, Four, Twelve, Two & Five. Like imagine a War Doctor Audio Novel read by Jonathan Carley, or if he were still in Big Finish and Eleventh Doctor one read by Jacob Dudman. Or how about a Ninth Doctor Audio Novel read by Christopher Eccleston

6 and Evelyn novel read by Colin, this is how we can have one last hurrah for them

Written by Jacqueline Rayner. With a scene of Evelyn making her famous chocolate sponge, I want to salivate as much as the Doctor does at the thought of those.

I’ve got Scourge and Watchers. I’ve only made it past the first episode of Scourge on both occassions I’ve tried to listen to it. I’ve also not tried Watchers yet.

I am, however, keen to try The Dead Star and Box of Terrors if anyone can recommend those.

The only one I’ve listened to all the way through was Terror of the Master which was part of the Masterful special edition and seems to be a pilot for this range. It was really good. I’ll get around to the others eventually.

Ah, I’d forgotten about that one! Hoping to get it when Masterful next goes on sale.

This was fun, and nice to have just a 2/Polly/Ben story
