I do love Charley and will always want more from her (I’m on the team we have to enjoy the dynamics as long as the actors are alive), but we can meet in that midpoint with the Furthers.
I do not mind if older companions appear in other ranges tho. I hope that now the CCs are back we can get new stories outside of the sixties, as much as I love the sixties (and they’re usually the best CCs anyway). Plus gimme that 8th Doctor audio novel by Kate Orman! Any companion will do!
That’s how it was advertised, but they also said there’d be a huge twist at the end so I was like “Oh okay, I guess I’ll listen immediately” and when I tell you… the eyreolling has never rolled more eyes than when I eyerolled at Charley’s return
I do wish we could revisit the EDAs in audio format one day (seriously, the ANs are perfect for that), but I guess it’s a combo of Big Finish thinking it’s too niche to sell well and confusing copyright issues
I’ve been into BF since DC1 and been following 8’s ongoing stuff since, so it just feels SO weird to be so directionless rn, like its just stuck in the past. It must be a transitional phase between Stranded and whatever comes next, maybe bts change of hands? Its been long enough though, I really need them to go beyond Stranded 4 pre-Time War. SO badly!
Also: I’ve been nostalgic of the season format. If we are not getting the Main Range back, go back to seasons for a little bit! Even if they are released as boxset (like 7V).
I was a bit disheartened when the Time War stuff started running concurrently with the Liv and Helen sets. I liked the Eighth Doctor having a continuous run but now we’re chopping and changing between 3 separate eras. Much like other classic Doctors I suppose, but the joy of Eight at BF was that we were pretty much following a continuous thread (with the odd exception as one-offs).
To be honest, I still consider the Liv and Helen stories as his ‘current’ point and the Time War stuff is a flashforward. Shame because it stops me getting fully invested in those. I listen to them and actually quite enjoy them but I still find myself not fully connecting with them because, well, they don’t feel like the ‘proper’ point in time for him.
This is all a me problem anyway, I’ll always buy Eighth Doctor stories from Big Finish. I just sort of find myself hoping for an end to the Time War run and a return to the point in time with Liv and Helen as the default so we can see where he goes from there and, ultimately, ends up where he does when the Time War kicks off.
As a card-carrying member of the Eight/Charley/Audacity fan club, and also a card-carrying member of the Tim Foley fan club, I’m very excited for this one! It sounds like there’s going to be a bit more development for this team in these stories, which is very exciting - I just hope we don’t lose Audacity soon (Hooklight implies something bad happens to her, but please not for a while yet!).
Similarly, as the Anti-@Jamie, I am duty-bound to insist that Big Finish produce hundreds more Charley boxsets, thank you very much
Plus: I think that Time-War mentality have hurt the Eighth Doctor. Ignoring he has a better time war in his own timeline that belongs entirely to him, that “there’s no way you can fit much more between Liv/Helen and the Time War” sentiment is a bit of a setback. Yeah, you can! Do hundreds of more eras there! It’s time to say goodbye to Liv anyways (since you botched her arc in Stranded)!
They have gone beyond Stranded with the Liv and Helen boxsets. At least I’ve always taken them to be post-Stranded (save for the little epilogue where Liv comes back to Tania).
But maybe I’m wrong in that.
Either way, I agree - I’d like them to pick back up here and continue from it.
That’s not untrue and why I agree that “we’re moving too slowly” regarding Eight, but that’s not how I see the current Time War era. It’s an extra. If it didn’t exist Eight would still be getting only two boxsets a year.
I still want to axe it only if because it has been sustaining itself in continuity in a way that doesn’t work for me. Using Cass as a companion was a terrible idea from the get go. Alex was already hard to sell, as cool as his cliffhanger on box 4 was, but it feels even more souless coupled with Cass.
While true, they only take place before Liv going back to Tania. I’d be quite happy with a few more with Liv and because they’re after the main events of Stranded I’ll happily take them as post-Stranded.
Then have some post-Liv. The beauty is we don’t need Liv to actually depart given the return to Tania in Stranded so we can just pick up a new boxset at some point without her.
But me personally, I’ll always consider What Lies Inside, Connections and Echoes as post-Stranded.
