Big Finish Novelisations

Amazon has just accidentally leaked(?/confirmed a previous leak) BBC Books are going to be publishing Big Finish Novelisations, starting with Jubilee

https://www.amazon.co.uk/BF-Novel-Jub-BBC-Books/dp/1785949578

“The Doctor and the Daleks. Have you never thought they are really both the exact same thing?”

It is time to celebrate! Let all the citizens of the glorious English Empire come together and give thanks to that mysterious soldier in time and space known only as the Doctor. For 100 years ago he destroyed a Dalek invasion force without mercy, and became the saviour of us all.

We have just one real Dalek left. Kept alive in the Tower of London, all these years our prisoner. And tomorrow we are going to blow it up, just for you! So put up your Dalek bunting and raise a glass of Dalek Juice. Who knows, there may be a special guest in attendance – the Doctor himself! Oh, you lucky people!

Time to get this party started…

The listing has Robert Shearman as author and BBC Books as the publisher (well, they’re listed as author as well, but you can assume), and is set to be released on the 9th of October

Robert Shearman has penned a brand new, radical reinterpretation of his classic Jubilee

‘Radical reinterpretation’ is an interesting term. Sounds like it’s not a straight adaptation, but will change things a little.

I KNEW lT DID I NOT PREDICT THIS IN ONE OF THE UPCOMING RELEASES TOPICS?!?

Sorry, got a bit over-excited there.

ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL US THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY ROBERT SHERMAN AND THAT YOU TRIED TO DROP HINTS OF THIS EARLIER?!?

Sorry, I forgot to switch off the caps lock!

So I doubt that every Big Finish story is going to be novelized. Which ones do you think are the strongest candidates?

Much as I’m having a wild fantasy of it, I don’t think Gallifrey would lend itself to novelisation very well (though a run of short stories…)

I think their iconic MR stories such as Spare Parts and Chimes of Midnight would be both good picks and lend themselves well to the concept.

The irony is that I was just posting in my Benny thread that I love how Big Finish made audio dramas of the VNAs because I prefer audio to reading.

And now they are making books of audio dramas!? That’s the opposite of what I want but thanks I guess  I’m sure people will enjoy them!

Oh boy so we will have Jubilee the audio drama, Jubilee the book, and then will there be an audiobook of Jubilee, the novel adaptation of the audio drama?

laughs in story variations

And of course there’s the TV adaptation Dalek, that also got novelized, which also has an audiobook reading. Is Jubilee now officially the most adapted Doctor Who story? Six versions, very fitting!

Shada has around that amount, with

*The 1992 VHS version

  • The 2003 audio version with McGann
  • The animated version of above.
  • The 2012 Novelization/audiobook.
  • The 2017 Animation featuring role reprisal by the surviving cast.
  • The 2021 Animation: Unlike '17, serial style instead of omnibus style (available only on the Season 17 boxset)

And Adams supposedly didn’t even like the story.

OOOOH this is fantastic news!

I love Rob Shearman’s prose and I love his audios. Really exciting stuff :star_struck:

I wonder if Marc Platt would want to adapt Spare Parts? That seems to me to be the most likely (and lucrative) choice if this isn’t a one-off…

I know this definitely won’t happen (at least officially), but hear me out.

The Word Lord and A Death in the Family novelizations in the style of “House of Leaves”

Spare Parts already has a novelisation, it was released back in the day before the bbc limited their prose licence

You’ve got to be pulling our legs. Do you have a link or something where i can read more about this, or am i missing something here

Edit: sorry, the only thing my brain is currently doing is repeating the words “big finish novelization” so i can’t think of anything else

This wasn’t on my Bingo Card for 2025. Very excited to see it! I am already manifesting Zagreus as an Entry for it.
I am very curious to see how different it will be from the Original Play (funny how many Versions that Story kinda has, if we count Dalek into it and all by Shearman! Surprised he didn’t get tired of the core elements of the Story).

Spare Parts and Chimes feel like the no-brainer Answer. Both penned by People who have experienced with Prose, both fan favorite, both ones you wouldn’t need Context. Marian Conspiracy could also be a Possibility, Rayner is also somebody who is well versed in Prose (this is an Assumption, they get the Original Writers for those btw) and since it’s Evelyns first outing it would make sense. Other than that, I am guessing they will focus on the Main Ranges, I don’t see them do Novelizations of some recent Output or ongoing ranges.
Either way, exciting News!

They should do novelizations of the novel adaptations range :stuck_out_tongue:

Having read one of Steven Hall’s novels, he is absolutely capable of that!

And I would LOVE to see it!
