I’ve done Living Legend, but I saw there’s an Erimem one which came out before the next MR I have so was debating listening.
The Veiled Leopard? It’s a pretty solid story, nothing stupendous, but not bad either!
No Place Like Home is Erimem as well.
Yes, No Place like Home is set between Church and the Crown and Nekromanteia, and it’s a fun story! As is The Veiled Leopard which isn’t set anywhere definitive (but you should listen to it sometime after Live 34, I’d say, for Ace and Hex).
Seen someone on twitter allude to this story being connected to Midnight? I assume maybe just thematically, but its intrigued me.
There is an interesting similarity in the mechanism of the story! Big spoilers for Ghost in the Machine: the second half of the story consists only of words that are spoken in the first half. Voices and the spoken word are very important. So, similar, but also quite different!
Also, I recommend Ghost in the Machine! It’s good stuff.
It does have a certain touch to it. Very creepy and very good. I highly recommend it (same for the most of the Companion Chronicles)
I was debating a thread, but not sure its needed (and I had it so overcomplicated poll wise )
So a more simpler question is this: Is the 8th Doctor era you started with at Big Finish your favourite, or is it another era? Era defined by range/companion generally but open to interpretation.
For me I started with Doom Coalition, and that era with Helen/Liv is just my ultimate fave so really that to Stranded and the extra sets we’ve had are my favourite 8 era.
- The era you started with
- A different era
Probably the Era that I started with, but it’s honestly hard to say I do think the early Boxset Era (Doom Coalition, Ravenous) is quite incredible, but also quite like the Charley Era (I am sorry, Jamie ) for its experimental Sense. Mind you, some Stories really don’t work, but then you have Things such as Chimes, Scherzo or Zagreus, all remarkable.
Then again, I am not quite sure which Era I favor more, but going to vote ‘Era I started with’ for now here.
My favourite Eighth Doctor era is the EDAs but my favourite BF era is probably the original two series.
I should caveat that I don’t think they’re the best or most consistent Eight stories – they just have a higher number of favourite stories (Venice, Chimes, Seasons, Neverland – and Scherzo and Natural History if we head into the DU).
I haven’t listened to too much Eight, but so far MR 8+Charley is miles better than 8DAs 8+Lucie. As in, three all time favourites in the first category, Vs two stories being not terrible in the second.
Started with 8 and Lucie. Loved Lucie. Went back to try 8 and Charley (still haven’t finished it), and didn’t care as much for Charley.
Gone through Dark Eyes, Doom Coalition, and now Ravenous (I don’t think I’m missing one, but I basically continued on from 8 and Lucie). I think as it goes on, my interest wanes. As it does if I go back to pre-Lucie. I’m trying to get into them but the settings are harder to imagine, the cameos are a bit everywhere, and I feel like so far the underlying plot is a bit ehhh
Anything I need to know before listening to the John Hurt War Doctor audios?
There’s John Hurt as The War Doctor! /j
Honestly, not really? There’s the debut of Cardinal Ollistra who was fabulously played by the late Jacqueline Pearce. She’s later in some 8 audios but yeah she originates here. The War Doctor stories (Hurt) are fairly standalone really!
Thank you so much for this!
As I had heard of the character of Ollistra before, I wasn’t sure whether I had to listen to her other appearances first.
Knowing this is her debut helps a lot.
Such a shame about her passing, she was taken from us far too soon. Absolutely phenomenal actress, her dynamic with John Hurt felt completely unique and very entertaining.
Lucie Miller forever and ever <3
I started with Liv and Helen (Stranded) and although I think they have overstayed their welcome a bit now through overuse, I still love them as my first 8 companions.
But I also love Lucie Miller, just think the Liv & Helen sets have better stories.
I don’t really care for Charley much, I’m trying to enjoy her, but also find the Main Range much more of a struggle to get through.
I don’t know how to vote on this because it’s impossible to choose a favourite between the Liv/Helen era (which I started with), and the Main Range. I love both so much in different ways.
