Big Finish General Discussion

If I absolutely had to pick three, I’d go for Graceless, the Torchwood main range and the 11 and Valarie series, although if The Robots continues with the same quality as the first two series, it might take over soon

Does anyone else feel like they are juggling way too much for 8 right now. I don’t mind a range jumping through different points in the Doctors timeline but we currently have 3 “current” plot lines that haven’t been resolved to follow for the 8th Doctor. I’m not sure if the Audacity range is over or if they still mean to do stuff with that. Most frustratingly is the Time War Uncharted stuff which is an ongoing story and is still going on. And then now we have a new companion and mystery to follow set who knows when other than near the end of his life. Why isn’t this last one a time war set? it’s set during the war do they plan to just ignore it but he’s wearing his time war outfit? But then we also have sets with Liv and Helen and we still don’t have a departure for them.

So who knows when the next Uncharted set comes out or if they’ve scrapped it and Audacity for this new storyline

I worry about this like hourly, barely an exaggeration lol. BF are stressing me OUT with my favorite range these days, I do not love it!

The Audacity run is definitely still going, the most recent set ends with some fairly obvious teases for future stories. I haven’t done the Time War run yet, but I think some behind-the-scenes chatter confirmed there would be one more set there (presumably next year). This year’s releases with Alfie and Chase seem to be framed as a mini-series that will be two releases and done - whether that means that’s it for the characters, or that they’ll continue to appear and future appearances will be a separate thing, we don’t yet know. Presumably Liv and Helen will also be back before too long, given the amount of teasing in their latest release.

Speaking personally, I don’t really mind that we’ve got several different strands going on, it helps keep things fresh and, more importantly, I’m attached to the different sets of characters. I do understand wanting more consistent releases though, it’s a shame we’re likely going to be waiting two years for more Audacity/Charley and Liv/Helen. If the current Time War range is ending next year, I’ll be interested to see if that strand is replaced on a yearly basis by Alfie and Chase (and we then get one set a year with the remaining three teams) or if we just get another Time War series of some kind (given the Bliss and Alex/Cass runs are technically separate things). McGann has recently talked about feeling like he’s doing more recording than he has the past few years, so who knows, maybe there are going to be more Eight sets per year in the near future?

It really doesn’t help the range feel focused or like any particular care is being put into any of it.

Yeah. I’ve not experienced much of 8 in his boxset era because I finished the Lucie era in 2022 when Stranded 4 came out, and I thought since Liv and Helen have been there for so long that I’d just wait for them to leave and jump onto the next new 8 era :grimacing:

Egg on my face for thinking that was going to happen. I’m not interested in Time War 8 and as much as I love Charley, I want to see 8 with a completely new team! At least it seems like there is a new era in November, so I’ll take it.

By the time they actually finish Liv/Helen I worry it won’t mean much to me because they will be following up on two to five year old teases & threads. Audacity is paused at maybe the most interesting spot, there are so many things to resolve there. Working my way through the Time War run now. I just have no enthusiasm at all for these two new companions, I’m at most kind of interested, but I’m mostly just annoyed by BF doing this instead of finishing even one of their four ongoing stories. I don’t mind variety, but these different threads should at least be rotating in some kind of order so we don’t leave any one story lying there for YEARS.

Exactly. I know I always talk about the 7th Doctor, but his range is kind of exactly what I want if Big Finish need to diversify. If I was in charge and there are two 7th Doctor sets a year, then I personally would make them all sets with Ray to forward that story. But if I can’t do that setting the sets at random points during his travels with Ace is better than introducing yet another new companion. Even better they seem to have some purpose. Like making a set during Ace’s first travels with The Doctor to retroactively build on an already beloved relationship or setting one during Season 24 an underappreciated part of his era.

8’s already kind of messed up but if I was in charge going forward I would either increase the number of his sets to compensate or finish off at least one story line. Also it’s Big Finish for brigg’s sake they can write a departure for Liv and Helen and then down the line just release more sets for them beforehand. They literally introduced a whole new companion during the Charley era I don’t think they are that worried about their timeline.

I almost referred to the seventh Doctor to compare with how the eighth is being messed around right now because of the status quo they used to have where they kept introducing new tardis teams and not concluding their storylines but then I remembered they’ve been getting better at that recently and let the Harry/Naomi stories finish.

Meanwhile Im still waiting for Time War or Ravenous to go on sale. But speaking from back here whenever Big Finish have these simultanious ranges it does make it a little difficult to work out how to tackle them.

I like doing release order, but dont really want to jump around between arcs in a binge. I tend to buy the box set ranges like Ravenous/Stranded/Time War all at once, but Time War is huge so I pretty much have to split it up into several purchases.

The 10th Doctor Adventures have a simmilar issue on a smaller scale

And it’s funny, this only bothers me with this range, but that’s also BF’s fault haha. They trained me over such a long time that this series is different, it’s one story moving forward, a story that even with Night Of The Doctor added still has so many unknowns to its shape, it’s not like the other ranges where we’re fitting in extra S24 or S7 or S15 stories etc. It doesn’t matter in the same way if there isn’t a Jo Jones story in the 3DAs for a year or two, I like those stories a lot but there isn’t the same forward momentum to that range, the 4DAs have always just done a series wherever, the 5DAs have mostly stuck to the original TARDIS team, but they’ll bounce off to other eras too. The 8DAs should be one ongoing story, it’s better for this range to be distinct in that way. And as people are saying, it’s not like finishing off Liv/Helen’s storyline would ever stop BF from doing another box with them set during Ravenous or Doom Coalition, we go back and fill in little bits all the time. If even one of these big stories were finished (and we ALL know Liv or Helen, probably both, shouldn’t have gone on after Stranded), I wouldn’t mind as much. But a whole new set of companions in a different era, and the one companion has already been there for a bit when the first story starts? Unfortunately I find that kind of annoying at the moment.

Uh odd issue but I seem unable to buy the Crispy Master Dark Gallifrey bundle?

Keeps popping up with this whenever i try to pay.

I’ve tried removing and readding it, logging out and back in, it won’t let me buy this and seemingly this is the only thing it’s not allowing me.

Maybe this is a sign.

Live from LIWho, the roundup of the ‘spend an hour bothering Jason Haigh Ellery session’:

  • my first q obviously was abt Gallifrey: he gave me his word WR4 would be out on time, but I didn’t get chance to ask abt more Gally after that
  • The new website and app were discussed, he apologised for the shamble
  • re CD pressing, he said they have been considering doing limited CD runs for ranges that have already been dl only such as the 12DAs
  • Chances of Omega Factor looking slim :( as for VamPD which sold poorly :( no plans for more B7 at the minute, but Time Tunnel was a more sort of mmmaybe response
  • Benny, not this year BUT next year or maybe year after (he confused himself) but also we’re never losing Benny :folded_hands:
  • gave him a CM ribbon and said ‘Allison :pleading_face::pleading_face::pleading_face:’ and he went ‘aw CM’ so… inconclusive
  • re Capaldi, the usual ‘not yet’, re Gatwa, expected at some point after some years and distance has happened from the TV release

Big Finish panel soon so will update if anything else interesting :)

That’s a shame. I’ve only listened to one bespoke Benny story (Oh No It Isn’t!), but even from my position I feel like Benny should be a constant presence at Big Finish

No Blake’s 7 plans and no Benny this year, what did I do to offend him :sob:

I’ll believe it when I have it in my ears, BUT nonetheless a very good sign

also :( I want more Omega Factor… and more VamPD… EVERYONE GET INTO THOSE RIGHT NOW

and we’ll get him to do a CM short trip yet. that’s not even asking for much :pleading_face::pleading_face::pleading_face:

I’d be interested in seeing them trial this. It could go down pretty well, gives dl only ranges the chance to get increased popularity through their run via word of mouth and if there is demand for CDs for them, then it makes sense to capitalise on that with popular dl only ranges.

A bit confused by this - I wouldn’t want to pay full price again to get the CDs, why didn’t they do this before people bought the digital version?
