It’s also crazy because a lot of later Doctors say they based their portrayal off of Troughton and we barely have any footage of him so just goes to show how memorable he was (for the ones who may have seen on telecast) or how impactful those (comparatively) fewer amount of actual televised scenes are
I think the best comparison for me is it would be like animating a missing Matt Smith. If you flattened his performance out into a cartoon version, you’d lose all those amazing quick changes he does with his hands and body, all the “ah yes, NO! Wait…” stuff is so wonderful because it takes so many unexpected turns within like a sentence haha. No shade whatsoever to the animation team who I really think do a great job, this is just an expert level performer to try and capture!
The crazy thing is I didn’t really stick with one type on my classic who watch, not that you could in the case of animation. But I tried to do telesnap recons early on and couldn’t really get into them. I actually was away more into the audio soundtracks but I’m also a big audiobook people so that really worked for me. Ive never messed with the target novelizations though i’ve heard they are well done. Then I feel in most cases the best version of experiencing the lost episodes is the animations. yes the quality may very but its the closest to watching those episodes you can get and in most cases does a better then just snaps or sound alone could do.
For me it depends but I usually go for animation if it’s available. I got whiplash going from faceless ones to evil of the daleks though. (I love how Jamie’s hair is in that, but he looks the best in the macra terror) But recons usually get the job done. Loose Canon usually do an awesome job and I think the only time I wasn’t keen was the highlanders. Though my opinion on that story has improved a lot now. And I mean look at the massacre! We don’t have telesnaps for it and yet they’ve managed to make a perfectly watchable recreation of it. And I like that story too so yay.
And on re-watch currently I’m doing a different route. The narrated audios (aka tv soundtracks) are actually better when you already know the story to be honest! And I’m listening to these after I finish the target novel/audiobook which is cool. It works when the novel sticks closely to the episodes (mentioning the massacre again because the novel is apparently completely different)
Mission to the unknowns recreation is so good though. The production values on it are so great even if it was just made in a university. It genuinely looks like it could be an episode from the sixties!
I was talking about the Ian Levine version but I’ve seen animations by the other fan before. I think they’re using a video game code and assets as their base which is neat.
That’s the Ian Levine version. Like I said it’s basically of the same level of quality as the official animations.
Ah nice. It’s a fantastic animation.
It’s a shame he took the AI route and produced a bunch of utter abominations to reconstruct missing episodes.
(And then had a hissy fit when the BBC didn’t beg him to release them…)
Yes! Love those!
So, this one is doing some kind of text-to-speech thing, and creating the sound from scratch as far as I can tell, on top of the digital/3D animation. Weird.
