BBC Past Doctor Adventures - A Discussion

I’ve read all of the PDAs - Some I loved, some I didn’t! I think I prefer the direction of the VMAs (Virgin’s earlier version of the same idea) but they have a place in my heart because you can see how the images we have of the Doctors and companions in new Who, even now, are being shaped in real time.

Craved some Ace/7, so I decided to read ‘Prime Time’ and quite enjoyed it. It’s definitely a book that lives off from its Interactions between 7 and Ace, which were quite delightful. A very entertaining Read, I recommend it!

Just finished Salvation and reslly enjoyed it. A better gods story than most of the RTD stuff tbh. Bar one edgy wilderness moment some great character writing for Dodo and Steven too

Echoing this! I think I know what Moment you mean and yeah that one was just unnecessary, overall a great Tale regardless, was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed that one, especially with how it tackles a God Storyline, felt very creative!

Read both Mission: Impractical and Heart of Tardis.
The former left me a bit lukewarm, despite being quite intrigued by it (and it being the final Piece for me to get the 100% on Frobisher), it didn’t quite sell as much as I would have hoped. I don’t think it’s a bad Book by any stretch, but I am a bit unsure where I land on this one. Oh, well.
Heart of Tardis was more like it, while far away from being my favorite PDA, it’s quite an enjoyable Read, Stone’s Prose are very readable in my Books, even if I don’t think I am the biggest Fan of their Prose. It’s a fun one.

Glad to hear Heart of Tardis is at least fun, cause it’s my next read after Lungbarrow and I’d rather not finish off Romana i on a bad note

Oh, nice, I hope you enjoy when you get around to it! I will warn you, the second Doctor Side of it is much stronger and dare I say leaves a larger Impact. I don’t think it does a bad Job with Four and Romana I, just maybe go into that book with that Knowledge (although, you may feel differently!)

Has anyone here read “Asylum”? I see that it has a mediocre rating, but the premise of Nyssa meeting the Fourth Doctor earlier than it’s meant to happen (not a spoiler - it is in the synopsis of the book) sounds way too intriguing. Is it any good?

I’m reading it right now! Halfway through, really enjoying it!

Haven’t read it but I believe it’s a bit ‘Name of the Rose’ in its tropes.

Ooh, you’ve got me interested! I adore The Name of the Rose. (Although I really haven’t enjoyed the previous work of Peter Darvill-Evans, so who knows.)

Is this a book? I only know that there is an apparently good movie. Is it an adaptation?

Yes – The Name of the Rose is an Italian book by Umberto Eco. It’s a postmodern medievalist murder mystery that’s also about language and semiotics as well the history of religion. It’s a fantastic book! I really recommend it – it’s one of my favourites.

There’s also a film adaptation of it starring Sean Connery that I know people love! I haven’t watched it yet but I intend to.

I forget where I read this or the full context (it might’ve been Tardis Erudatorum or maybe Ray Dexter’s Episode by Episode series), but apparently Name of the Rose would work well as a Four/Adric serial.

Well, read two new PDAs, Rags and Combat Rock and oh lord.. the latter one is just awful, I must admit I haven’t heard much of its infamous Reputation or looked at any Reviews, but yeah I can see why it’s notorious for many. Lots of the worst Traits of the Wilderness Books here are to be found, while admittedly the second Doctor is well-characterized, I cannot say many positives for the rest of it, really don’t recommend it, even if you have a morbid curiosity!
Rags was a bit better, but not by much, don’t have too many Words to lose on that, if I am being honest.

I expected to hate Combat Rock but actually found it pretty readable. The regulars are extremely well characterised which helps.

I am a bit of a conflicted mind about the latter, while I do think 2 is done quite well (maybe even more so than in other Books (and that’s honestly a lot of Praise considering I think he is a hard one to translate to the Pages)), I don’t think the same is true for Jamie in example, in my Eyes. (Don’t really have much of a strong Opinion how Victoria is written/characterized in that Book, honestly)

But then again, I am only pleased to hear that you found it readable and were able to found Aspects that you quite liked about it! :hugs:

I’m definitely not reading Combat Rock, but I do want to read Rags. Because a friend of mine did say that at first it was a bit too edgy, but as it went along it reminded him of Clive Barker’s works. And that got me intrigued

Also funny that I met Mick Lewis in person without any idea who he was. He was surprisingly chill
