The more I see of I&B’s era, the more I think Barbara might actually be Classic Who’s most active (vs. reactive) female companion. She often beats the Doctor to coming up with a solution, e.g., instructing the Robomen to kill the Daleks in The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
Also, for the longest time I thought Ian and Barbara were a married couple. Not even dating, I thought they were married. I guess the different last names didn’t quite strike me? It wasn’t until I noticed Susan said “Miss Wright” that I realized they weren’t. [1]
See also the phone operator in Britain who called me “Mrs [Scarlet],” then backtracked and said, “Sorry, is it Mrs Scarlet or Miss Scarlet?” I wanted to say “It’s Ms!” but I didn’t and just said it was Miss. Such a funny demonstration of how differently the UK and US address people, because over here an operator would always have called me “Ms. Scarlet,” or just “Sophie.” ↩︎

That’s a fair thing to think, I’d think most of the Fandom probably subscribe to that Idea as well too!
They are so cute
Ian and Barbara are sooo married. Like, my biggest problem with watching S1 is not the black and white, or the different pacing, it’s that like every other story there’s some random dude who starts flirting with Barbara. And I just get really, really, irrationally angry at them lmao. I’m usually very chill about shipping and multi-shipping and non-canon shipping and whatever. But she is married. Leave her alone!!
Forever appreciative of Barbara for (among so many things!) being the person who managed the truly astonishing feat of getting the First Doctor to realize that other people have feelings in The Edge of Destruction.
Their banter, even in the very opening scene, is such a delight.
Oh! And let’s not forget that Barbara is, well, the reason the rest of the show happened — it was her idea to well-intendedly stalk her student check out 76 Totter’s Lane in the first place!
They are one of those couples that are acting like married couples naturally
she’s amazing, i feel like she doesn’t get enough appreciation from the wider fandom in general but she (when teamed up with ian and vicki especially) is one of my favourite companions
