Back To Earth - A Big Finish Martha Jones thread

After dabbling in Big Finish with Torchwood’s Main Range’s Dissected alongside Eve Myles, Freema Agyeman did a single boxset titled “The Year of Martha Jones”.

This boxset contained three stories, exploring what Martha was up to as she roamed across the world during ‘The Year That Never Was’. A setting that people had talked about being ripe for stories before it came out. It had a lot of excitement leading up to it, and released to a resounding… ‘meh’.

An average rating of 3.17/5 (at time of typing) isn’t bad, but it’s not exactly great either. But maybe there’s more they can do if they’re ever able to get Freema back. Dissected by contrast is quite highly rated (avg 4.03/5) and does a great job plugging the gap between her appearance in Journey’s End and The End of Time.

So, with all that said, a few questions:
Have you listened to The Year of Martha Jones or Dissected? What did you think?
What do you think of Martha as a character?
What do you think about the idea of stories taking place during The Year That Never Was?
If Martha were to come back on Big Finish, what ‘era’ or Martha would you like to see?

I swear I heard these were super popular so the ratings gagged me a bit today. I was disappointed at the lack of theme tune like how Dimension Cannon had its own. Did Kidnapped? I don’t remember its been so long.

Regarding Francine being in this… How does this fit in with the timeline wasn’t she constantly under lock and key in the Valiant during the year?

From the synopsis of the first story

Martha arrives on the west coast of the US and finds an old friend waiting to make contact.

A desperate group gathers for her stories. But when Francine arrives, escaped from the Valiant, she isn’t so keen to hear about the Doctor…

Did they never get Tennant alongside Agyeman like they did with Piper and Tate, for a few stories?

Yeah I listened to the first ep today but I just felt like it didn’t fit perfectly into what I remembered from the finale of S3. Granted I’ve rarely ever rewatched it so that’s why I asked!

Unfortunately not. Freema only ever did this boxset and the one TW Monthly with Gwen.

Nope, she’s only been on those four I mentioned

Aw, that’s a shame. I think Martha is hugely underrated. It’d be great to see/hear her back with Tennant some day, even for a one off boxset.

Agreed! I really enjoyed episode 1 of this spin-off today, I’ll be sure to let you know if I recommend picking it up once I finish the whole set. The Torchwood one I remember being good!

I think this one is pretty weak. I think that it would have been better to do a box after end of time. That would have been much more interesting. Easily the weakest of 10s companions spin offs.

I remember when Dissected was announced and it was so thrilling - Freema on audio!! And I remember liking it well enough. Year of, I haven’t listened to and I have never seen anyone say anything close to a rave review

The only thing I’ve ever heard about this is my friend who only got into BF last year said it was great. Kidnapped was good and camp, Rose S1/2 ate but S3… the less said the better.

One of the most interesting ideas that were poorly executed in Nines Titan Comics where when 9 meet after the end of time Mickey and Martha and have to hide them from Rose. Unfortunately, the story was pretty bad but I think that would have been a great audio. But it will never happen, Mickey’s actor is a dick and good luck casting Ecelston, Piper, and Agyeman in the same audio.

I was excited for this, but found it pretty ehhh after listening. It’s a dystopian reality which should’ve played into that more. But instead Martha gives off The Power of Friendship vibes, rather than going on a exhausting journey. I also find the whole thing with Francine a bit too convenient of a plot device, and I wish she wasn’t involved at all tbh.

Martha is much better in Dissected, and I loved Dissected for showing the UNIT vs Torchwood practices, and found myself agreeing with Gwen more than Martha, personally

Not BF but she’s great in Lost Souls too

Now I need to listen to that. How did I go from being a TW hater to a TW binger in just a week?

No one these days ever recommends Torchwood to someone without the audios being included. The audios literally carry the show.

I remember listening to The Year of Martha Jones back when it was first released and being very disappointed by it. All I can remember was that the stories were all boring.

Oh no, I really need to add all the TW audios to my ever-growing list of audios to listen to, don’t I?

Everytime someone listens to series 5-7 an angel gets its wings.

I mean, I’ve always been a vocal advocate for everyone to listen to Torchwood.

One person listens to TSC, and you all fall like dominos and it’s not even the best TW audio /hj (sorry @Jamie )

Honestly I’m just doing my best to get more ppl into it :sob: for me s5-7 > tv torchwood. In fact BF torchwood > tv torchwood.
