Yet another obscure Author Talk by me? Well of course! Today we look at a Writer, who has only wrote two Stories with large Gaps, both of them featuring the Eighth Doctor performed by Paul McGann.
As his very first Story we have the TV Movie, also known as “The Enemy Within” or “Doctor Who The Movie” in other Places. A Film designed to kick off a new Series of Doctor Who Adventures with Paul McGann, which we all know at least televised never happened. At the Time the Film was fairly controversial, especially for its Suggestion that the Doctor might be half-human (on his Mother side).
And while this Incarnation never really got much Time onscreen, with various Books, Short Stories and of course Big Finish, he got a Life on its own and a very long one at that!
The Writer behind the TV Movie, wouldn’t return to the Franchise until 2024, where it was announced he would Penn a Script for the third Boxset featuring Charley and Audacity. “Puccini and the Doctor” was the Story he wrote for it, which does draw Inspiration from a Throwaway-Line in his First Work of the Show.
What are people’s opinions of his two Doctor Who Entries? Would you want more of his writing? Where do you stand with the TV Movie? And which of the two is your favorite?
As a huge TV Movie stan, I was delighted when I found out he’d be back for a BF story, less so since it involved Charley though. It was a really good story and my favourite of the set!
I can’t sadly comment on the Set (only listen to this Story (so far)) but I enjoyed it as well! And yes, TV Movie stans unite! While by far a bit messy at times, there is a lot to love about the TV Movie, after all it introduced THE EU Main Incarnation of the Doctor!
Puccini was good, I just hated it - completely my personal taste coming to play here because objectively it was a really solid piece of writing. Jacobs does get Eight very well and I wish he’d write more
Being a fan in 1996 during the Wilderness Years, the excitement and anticipation around the TV Movie was tangible. And, for me, it didn’t disappoint. I thought it was brilliant and everything I wanted from Doctor Who at that time. It’s such a shame it didn’t lead to anything on TV but it did lead to a phenomenal range of audios and a superb range of books, so it’s not all bad.
