Lyons has written some good stuff, so I wouldn’t mind him on TV
Cornell would be nice to have back to TV, especially if we got Bernice on Screen.
Rob Shearman is the writer who I most want to write for TV again, him coming back would be brilliant.

I wouldn’t mind, but he is probably the one I don’t feel the strongest about getting the gig, still pretty great or solid from what I heard or read of his.
Yes please. No elaboration, he is easily one of the writers who I would love to get more TV Scripts from, if anybody from the VNAs should return again, it’s easily him. (Also put Benny in the Show, thank you)
Yes. I do love to see him write for the Show again. It’s shearman, who wouldn’t want another TV Script of his?!
Here’s the next batch (though it’s five authors this time):
Alan Barnes: Fairly famous in Doctor Who circles. Barnes was Assisstant Editor and then sole Editor of DWM from 1996-2002. He wrote several comics for DWM and some for DWA. He wrote several Big Finish audios including for the Main Range (#16, 33, 50*, 64*, 103, 114, 123c, 127, 146, 164*, 177, 199, 211, 252)[1] and wrote for Gallifrey (1.1, 1.4, 3.5). For TV, he wrote The Infinite Quest. Should Barnes be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Paul Magrs: The creator of Iris Wildthyme, Paul Magrs has written several novels, short stories and audios (including the Nest Cottage Chronicles). For the Main Range, he wrote #18, 51, 97, 110, 173, 210, 217b, 245. Paul Magrs has not written for the TV show. Should Magrs be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Alan W. Lear: This author is kind of shrouded in mystery with a tiny stub of a page on the wiki. His only credit is Minuet in Hell which he co-wrote with Gary Russell. That story was essentially a remake of an old Audio Visuals script and the time period and location was changed while keeping most of the story beats. Should Lear, if he’s still alive, be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Gary Russell: Editor of Doctor Who Magazine from 1992-1995, Executive Producer for Big Finish Productions from 1998-2006, Script Editor for Waters of Mars, End of Time, a handful of Series 2 Torchwood stories and a large chunk of the SJA, Gary Russell is well-known to Doctor Who fans. He has also written a ton of Doctor Who stories including novels, comics, audios and short stories, he is known for filling his stories with an abundance of continuity references. His Main Range writing credits are all co-author credits and cover three stories: Minuet in Hell, Zagreus, and The Next Life. He has not actually written a TV story yet. Should Gary Russell be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Marc Platt: Writer of Ghost Light for TV, a handful of novels, and several short stories and audios. Platt is one of the creatives behind what was informally dubbed by fans “The Cartmel Masterplan”. For the Main Range, he wrote #20, 34, 96, 113a, 125, 138, 153, 161, 172, 205, 231. Should Platt be enticed back to the TV series?
releases with and * had co-writers ↩︎
I’d love Paul Magrs and Marc Platt to write for the TV series.
Paul Magrs please please on my hands and knees reference my Aunty Iris on TV please please
Would adore a Paul Magrs story!! Yes please! And I’d like the others too, especially Marc Platt. Unfortunately I don’t think Lear is around anymore.
So, this has gone through the first twenty Main Range releases and their authors. There are of course authors who’ve wrote multiple stories so I don’t think it’s actually twenty authors. That said, here’s a poll of every Main Range writer thus far. Who would you like to write for the TV show? Remember, you can vote for as many as you want.
So I’m not always a fan of Magrs and Platt and their weird ideas, but I’d be intrigued to see them write for the TV show one day.
As for Barnes and Russell, I’m quite indifferent to their writing overall. It could go either way with them.
Yes. I’d love a barnes penned TV Script honestly! Even if his track record is one of the messier ones, honestly
Big yes. Thousands time yes, he has such a particular style for writing, which makes him a great Fit for TV! Honestly, he is easily in my Top 5 of EU Writers to move to the Show one day, at least with one Script. (Can you tell how much I love Magrs’s Work?)
I do be open for it, but he can be quite a messy writer, I do really love his Highs, I suppose getting him to write something very anniversary would be lovely other than that, I am not quite sure honestly.
I think he is one of the best classic Writer, they should give him a Call again for sure!
I’m admittedly very curious about what Cartmell would do with NuWho
He was planned to write a Torchwood story originally
Back after a bit of a break we get the next set of Main Range writers:
Jonathan Morris: A prolific author, Morris has written a handful of novels (including fan-favorite Touched by an Angel), a large number of short stories, a ton of audios and a large run of DWM comics (including a large number of Eleventh Doctor DWM comics). For the Main Range, he’s written #22, 46, 107, 113b, 123d, 128, 136, 143, 156, 162, 167, 174, 179, 189, 197, 201, 208, 225a, 233, 249, 269b. He has not written for the TV series itself. Should Morris be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Cavan Scott: Often partnering with Mark Wright, Scott has written a couple audios on his own (Devil in the Mist, The Bleeding Heart, High Spirits, Undwerworld), a couple novels, several short stories, and several comics including the entire Titan Ninth Doctor run. With Mark Wright, he wrote for the Main Range the three “Project” audio stories (Twilight, Lazarus, Destiny) as well as Masters of Earth and The Church and the Crown. He has not written for the TV series. Mark Wright: Often partnering with Cavan Scott, Wright has also written a lot of audio, short stories and comics. His only Main Range entries have been with Scott (though he has several solo-written stories outside of the Main Range). He has not written anything for the TV series. Should Cavan Scott and/or Mark Wright be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
Iain McLaughlin: The creator of Erimem has written a fair amount, it’s just mostly Erimem stuff. His only Main Range story is The Eye of the Scorpion. He has not written for the TV show. Should McLaughlin be commissioned to write an episode of the TV series?
He can be very hit-and-miss honestly, but yes I do love to see him to do an Episode!
Haven’t done much of his Stories, most of his Stories didn’t do much, so no. I wonder how @Owen feels about him.. hmm
This one, which I probably come back to when I get around to more of his Stories, so no comment on him yet.
Yess, would love Jonathan Morris on the show! Even if he’s generally not as good with shorter stories imo, I still like him a lot. Would absolutely love to see what he could do on TV. Now, him writing a two-parter, that would be truly amazing.
Scott and Wright.
Actually.
Look I’d say yes to this just ‘cause I’m curious what it’d be like. Maybe they’re actually good on TV. But I absolutely despise Cavan Scott’s writing, and also do not like Wright’s style (their prose is ok though and the MR in France they did I like). So that.
McLaughlin I don’t see writing for the show, and I don’t have much of an opinion on his writings, but I like him I think.
Scott’s my favourite writer of course! Don’t you know how much I love Project: Twilight and Weapons of Past Destruction! Project: Lazarus, a masterpiece of emotional writing and clever twists of course! Absolutely! /noofcoursenot
Cavan Scott and Mark Wright are 50/50. I like their work on audio. I do not like their work on comics. Overall, no, there are better options to pick.
Jonathan Morris is a yes. McLaughlin not really, even though I do love Eye of the Scorpion.
Going back to Russell a bit, I don’t mind his work as a writer much. What I want to see from him again is that “showrunner” role.
I’ve obviously got some bias given my love for Peri and Erimem, but I would be really interested in seeing what McLaughlin would do on TV (possibly with Claire Bartlett as they co-write a lot and I think are a very good team). I’ve listened to/read a lot of his stuff at this point and am going through the Erimem series now and I’ve yet to encounter a story that I didn’t rate at least 3.5 stars
As an experiment in-between Seasons, I wrote up a short wishlist of things I’d like to see in Season 2, both characters and writers. At the bottom (as in the thing that seems the least likely to happened), I just wrote [Big Finish writers]. Partly because there’s genuine talent in that writing pool, but mainly because it would just mean more writers for the show in general. I like RTD as a writer (not bulletproof but he has some classics under his belt), and while I think he’s already shown some signs that he’s developing as a writer, more variety would still be nice to see.
Beyond those included in the poll so far, I’d love to see Nev Fountain brought in for an episode. Only BF writer I’ve encountered so far with a track record as consistent as Shearman, and while I love Rob’s work, he seems to be stuck in a perpetual cycle of just rewriting his older stories nowadays.
Have you read his short story collections? They’re absolutely fantastic—and very different from his Who work.
I’ve been meaning to check them out (waiting for the hyperfixation wheel to hit the right wedge, I guess, lol). I don’t doubt his abilities as a writer overall. But specifically in terms of Who, he appears stuck.
I think he’s just not interested in doing new doctor who stories, hes talked a lot about how he likes that basically all of his stories are considered as classics and doesn’t want to ruin that
