It drags on a bit too long and McGann is so obviously having a terrible time but the atmosphere is gloriously palpable and we’re given one of the Divergent Arc’s best villains.
Also does some incredible character work with C’rizz and Charley.

Now see this is one I remember because I despised it… Charley is worse than useless all story, C’rizz is okay I guess, and I think I remember the whole thing pretty misogynistic - though I’m willing to be disputed on that one, it has been a long while since I listened. But I did not like it and am not too likely to relisten unless someone gives me a damn good reason to
A bit of a mid entry in the DU saga. It has a great setting, a fantastic villain, and interesting themes. It’s a bit slow and kinda sidelines Charley though.
7/10
The Last succeeds in creating an immersive, apocalyptic atmosphere, with strong performances and moments of genuine horror. Excelsior is a fantastic villain, and the interplay between the TARDIS team allows for some solid character moments—particularly for C’rizz. However, the slow start, Charley’s sidelining, and the predictable reset ending prevent it from reaching its full potential. It’s a haunting and ambitious story, but one that never quite lands with the impact it seems to be aiming for.

I LOVE this story. It is darker than dark with some absolutely horrendous characters. You definitely need to be in the right mood for it. The atmosphere is so palpable. The hopelessness of the entire situation is almost beautiful. The Last just really scratches a very specific itch with its themes and storytelling for me. It is not perfect, but it is a really nice bit of darkness before everything goes insane for Caerdroeia.
Oh hey, we’re on to the first ever story I ranked on TARDIS Guide!
Despite constantly complaining about how miserable this TARDIS Team and a lot of the DU stories are, here the darkness works for me. This story is grim and difficult to listen to, but I think it explored interesting ideas and has such a moody vibe I can’t help but be drawn to it. I’m never bored at any point, and once the companions start actually dying I’m hooked. And for once I didn’t mind a reset button because it felt set up!
Still only a 7/10 but considering how negative I am about most of the DU, a 7 feels pretty high to me. Next up is my favourite DU story though (other than maybe Scherzo on latest listen)
It’s been a while since I last listened to this one, but I remember quite liking it! Granted, this one of the Cases where it does get carried by its superb atmosphere, and it’s utterly bleak Tone, but outside of it, I still think it has a lot to offer. And compared to some previous entries of the DU it feels at times much more abstract in some of its Storybeats, which is most welcome.
It sadly does have some Points that drag it down for me. While I adore longer Stories, you can feel the Runtime here at times. I don’t think the Side Cast or our Companions are used that well, besides some Moments with C’rizz. Having our Companions actually die here, even if a reset was very obvious especially us listening in hindsight, is still quite effective and great.
Despite some of its major Flaws, I still think this one of the Highlights of DU and the good outweighs some bad!
