I have a bit of a soft spot for this episode as it was one of the first BF releases I picked up back in 2022, and led me to getting into Graceless, which is still one of my favourite spinoffs. The story itself is fine, the Ice Warriors have never interested me that much but there’s some decent action, 6/10

Introduction to (IMO) the worst thing Big Finish ever contributed to the Doctor Who mythos: Amy (later Abby) and Zara.

Admittedly, what truly annoys me about these two would become more pronounced once Graceless was a thing (actively do not like that entire range), but there’s not much here that sparks much interest in seeing more stories featuring these two. Not a great start for a trilogy of stories.

Doesn’t help that the sound design is… let’s say “interesting”.

Oh we’re on Key2Time already??? Wow… Not to be contrary but I really liked Abby and Zara and found Graceless to be a great spinoff, though I cannot remember very much about this episode in detail now other than I liked it well enough

I’ve been waiting well over a year to say[1] that this is chronologically the first Main Range story which felt more like nostalgia pandering than something substantial. The title The Key 2 Time says it all.

I liked Amy Abby and Zara, at least. Glad that they got a new lease on life in Graceless, which I’ll listen to in the far, far future. (Not because it’s bad, but because I’m a horrific procrastinator.)

  1. most of that time on The Time Scales, a good thing in hindsight… ↩︎

Meh. It felt like there were three really good stories that wanted to be told here and instead of just deciding on one, they threw all 3 in a blender and spat this out.

It’s definitely speedrunning due to only having four stories (three Main Range, one Companion Chronicle) to collect six segments over rather than one story per segment. The Doctor practically gets a freebie before the story has started, and the next segment is identified before the first episode ends! Okay, yes, Romana found and converted the statue very quickly in Androids of Tara, but that got the Key to Time requirement out of the way and allowed for the Prisoner of Zenda stuff to happen.

It is a rather odd place in the Fifth Doctor’s timeline, especially as Omega already established a gap at the end of Arc of Infinity where the Doctor was briefly travelling solo (next used for The Burning Prince). It’s literally shoving this trilogy into the Peri period of the Fifth Doctor’s life and freezing her out for the six hour duration.

I have to mention the inlay artwork. If you put the inlays for these three stories together, Judgement on top, Destroyer in the middle and Chaos on the bottom, it makes a poster for the trilogy as a whole.
