Audio Club: The Eye of the Scorpion

I love me a “war of succession”-style story so this was quite up my alley. Ancient Egypt isn’t a subject I’m that well-versed on but can’t deny that it is a fascinating setting. I loved Erimem, especially her dynamic with Peri and their respective worlds and perspectives clashing. I thought the plot was fun and intriguing for the most part, Yanis was kind of ridiculously bombastic but honestly he gave me Irongron (from The Time Warrior) vibes and that is a big plus in my book.

Whilst I think this story didn’t need an Alien twist, the villain’s whole concept of a pseudo-hivemind was really cool and I thought the way it was defeated was clever. Five being out for most of a part doesn’t bother me that much as that time was just filled with Peri and Erimem’s adventures which were great fun. Peri dunking on the patriarchal nature of Egypt’s society was also entertaining to hear.

In terms of negatives, the Sphinx having ancient tunnels underneath it built by people from Atlantis feels like it comes right out of nowhere, the Aliens could use a bit more development and (this is minor) I think it would be nice if they actually named the pharaoh that preceded Erimem. Just a nitpick. (Seems it would be one of the Amenhoteps or Thutmoses)

The best of this audio is definitely Erimem and her relationship to Five and Peri (Peri especially). I don’t get how people find this boring, even if the plot is a little basic, this was great. 8/10.
