Another story that made me realise that Eighth’s memetic penchant for amnesia or memory loss in general… was not an issue for me for the most part. Really like the atmosphere of the setting, like if Cube took place in the X-Men universe, and there’s quite a bit of neurodivergent coding that I read from it (the idea of punishing people because of what was done to them in the name of capitalising on… let’s say ‘mental gifts’, rings quite familiar), which I like. Definitely a good pick-me-up after the ranging-from-meh-to-bleh of the previous three Eighth audios.
Oh hey, it’s the first story I ever gave 1.5 stars to! I remember listening to this in the Rijksmuseum on my solo trip to Amsterdam last year and finding it both simultaneously boring and just very annoying despite some decent ideas with the whole mind powers stuff. I just remember it really dragged on and was not a good time at all (unlike the art gallery and museum, which were amazing).
I just saw a message I sent my mate Cal about it where I complained about how often the phrase “brain worm” was used lmao
This is an audio of strong ideas that don’t make for the most compelling story.
Something Inside strands the Eighth Doctor, Charley, and C’rizz inside a psychic prison full of failed telepaths. What could have been a strong, atmospheric tale collapses under tired tropes – amnesia, mind parasites, generic villains – and drags into overacted, overlong sequences. The Cube is an evocative setting, but the story has nothing fresh to do with it.
Here’s my non-spoilery review for those who fancy a read. Thanks!
Something something the Brain Worm something something the war something something psychic soldiers something something this could have been so much better and I was bored.
No actually I need to bring up how frustrating it is whenever Doctor Who takes on the super soldier there’s an opportunity to really explore just how screwed up the concept is in this day and age of the military-industrial complex and instead we tend to get really dull and basic stories when the base idea has so many directions to create some genuinely amazing and impactful stories.
I like this Story, honestly. It’s been a while since I did this one, but I remember liking it.
The Concept of Amnesia with 8 is kinda unique, I wonder why it hasn’t been done before or after again..
Nice Story, where the ideas are maybe greater than the whole of it, but still an enjoyable one, even if it’s on the weaker end of the 8th Doctor Audio Spectrum.
Yeah, this one sucked imo. Even if Trevor Braxendale wasn’t already a terrible person, this was still a boring, contrived waste of two hours. If I see another 8 loses his memory story, I’m gonna cry.
Horrible. It has interesting ideas but they never get developed, it felt VERY SLOW, I liked Crizz’s involvement but once again I felt Charley did nothing. The Doctor and Crizz escaping was a moment I loved, but beyond that there isn’t a single interesting moment.
I give it a 6/10. What I do have to mention is that I feel 8th had a strange characterization—sometimes he acted very out of character.
Eight gets amnesia… again. It’s set inside a space base… again. Charley is a nonentity… AGAIN. It’s so boring, I barely remember anything… AGAIN! I don’t mind going back to the well, but at least have the decency to be as entertaining as “The Inheritance” (evil corporation), “Lucie Miller” and “To the Death” (Daleks on Earth), “The Time Museum” (fanservice), “Peri and the Piscon Paradox” (timey wimey), or “A Thousand Tiny Wings” (base under siege). As you can see, it isn’t that hard.
