Scaredy Cat is a frustrating missed opportunity—an audio drama brimming with eerie setup, dark ideas, and twisted morality, but one that rushes through every concept it introduces. Eunis Flood is a striking villain, and the early haunted atmosphere holds promise, but the story’s short runtime, retooled structure, and weak second half leave most of its threads dangling. The result is a tale that feels less like a satisfying story and more like a half-remembered dream of one. Worth a listen for completists and fans of the Divergent Universe team—but don’t expect anything fully formed.
Here’s my spoilery review for those of you who fancy a read. Thank you!
Listened to Scaredy Cat for the first time whilst I was ill, didn’t take any of the plot in and so thought “right, I’ll give it another go when I can actually pay attention” and… needn’t have bothered, really
By the way, I spoke with Gary Russell at the convention about this one - he said that this audio recorded before the Divergent Universe was wrapped up and it was initially set in there, so after the axing they had to cut everything even remotely related to DU from Scaredy Cat, and that’s why it’s so short and so confusing
Wracked by behind the scenes issues and lumped with an unfocused and generic script, Scaredy Cat is definitely a big let down, especially after I found The Twilight Kingdom to be a surprisingly fun listen.
Some of the imagery I praised in that latter audio is still present but for the most part, this is a story without much behind it and a lot of tropey plot beats.

Scaredy Cat is one of the worst audios I’ve listened to. There is however one moment where I couldn’t stop laughing, it happens near the climax where Eight (who sounds completely bored throughout the entire story) gets psychically attacked and he just suddenly lets out a cry that sounds like a mix between a Homer Simpson scream and a chicken squawking!
Confusing and boring but at least when I listened to it I had the fun solace of being able to make jokes that Mrs Flood’s identity was that of the wife of this story’s villain and that’s fun
Scaredy Cat is good, until it isn’t.
It’s a weird one, because you can really tell how short this one is compared to every other Monthlie Range Release, on one hand it’s a pity because with a bit more fleshing out, it could be great. On the other hand, if it was longer, who knows if the good Things it has going for it, would still be there or at least be something worth to point out. The Imagery is great, the Atmosphere is great, some of its Ideas are good, but it just ends up feeling very much lackluster. It’s a weird one, because there is a lot I could say about it, but at the same Time, I don’t really feel the need or the want to do so.
It’s so short and yet, somehow, I end up feeling bored the entire length of the story. It starts great with the scene in the TARDIS gardens but after that, it’s downhill. And the worst part is that there’s a fantastic story hiding in the concept. Alas.
