The TARDIS lands on a snowy island off the coast of Alaska — one that wasn’t there four years, three months and six days ago, according to the Doctor. The island is dominated by a vast, twisted citadel. Inside it, the Lurkers lie dreaming. It’s said when they wake the world will end…

This is one of those stories that sort of gets forgotten because of what is happening around it (coming straight after A Death in the Family for example).
But I think it’s a pretty solid adventure - a 7/10 easily.
At a time where the Seventh Doctor was getting major story arcs, this one being a stand-alone Seven, Ace and Hex story is appreciated. The Lovecraft homage is surface level, and I’d imagine the most love it or hate it aspect of the story although at least it didn’t use the actual Lovecraft (now that was really bad time that one).
It is interesting how little Hex features in the marketing. He’s not on the cover, at least in a way that it’s obviously him, nor is he in the trailer, he’s just credited at the bottom of the sidebar. I kind of want to Waybackmachine to see when this cover was revealed because everything else was playing coy on if he died in Project Destiny.
They wanted people to think he properly left after Project Destiny. They even had a fake Death in the Family cover that doesn’t feature him with Nobody-No One in his spot.
Decent. Not very memorable, nothing terrible either. Will always be haunted for being the story that comes just after A Death in the Family. I don’t think if was a good idea to immediately follow up that one with another story because intentionally or not once the Main Range starts doing these releases in three-s they are consumed as trilogies and this one evokes a very “wait, we’re ending at this???” energy.
Would have bumped up The Angel of Scutari so it made a trilogy with Project: Destiny and A Death in the Family, then added another story to make company to The Magic Mousetrap and Enemy of the Daleks. Of course it isn’t realistic as it was made years later, BUT if I had my pick from the existing stories it would be Muse of Fire.
Not bad, not amazing. It’s a fun little Lovecraft homage. A solid 7/10 that just kind of feels worse than it actually is because it follows on from one of the best stories ever.
