Yeah, I forgot to mention Maxil’s cameo - it is a lovely touch.
Appropriation - 9/10 (Spoilers)
On the one hand, it’s a shame they cut the Gallifreyan Civil War short. On the other, they cut it short for this which I adore.
I love a good political drama, and this certainly is that. Here we get not just the one major political meeting, but two occurring at the same time. Before diving into those though, I also want to talk about the ramifications of the previous stories.
I said in my last review that I think these would be much better binging through them, and I absolutely stand by that. I love how much this story builds off of what happened in the last. The characters are having to deal with the fallout of everything: Pandora’s fall, the Matrix’s destruction, the other temporal powers’ reactions to everything that’s occurred, Romana’s weakness, Leela’s blindness, etc. The way everything is just sort of thrown at the characters does a great job in making the civil war feel even more impactful, it may have been a little shorter, but the ramifications are going to take an age to deal with.
But with that said, lets then get onto the politics. First of all we have the meeting of the temporal powers, along with the ‘invasion’ of gallifrey. I love the brief glimpses we get of the invasion and the characters reactions to it, all hiding away because after everything that’s happened they’re mostly not in a fit state to fight. Also how can you not love the little cameo from Maxil. The actual meeting itself is great too with the other powers not taking any shit from gallifrey, but also most not wanting to start an all out war, but with the slow convincing to do so.
But then there’s the debate over who the new president should be which is absolutely the high point for me. The twists and turns and technicalities. Darkel twisting the law in an attempt to seize the presidency for herself with the assistance of Valyes. Romana also using the precise wording of the law to her own advantage, and forcing the council to depose her as president, in turn acknowledging that she was the president. And then Matthias’ coming in and also trying to take it, claiming his effective vice-presidency should put him in the running. All of it is just so fun and I absolutely adore every single new twist and turn that we get.
Love the politics, love to hate Darkel, love the series so far.
Just listened to this and found it rather boring.
I didn’t want to say anything, thought I’d stay quiet as I read you all giving it 9/10, but then @sircarolyn said:
So I feel vindicated
I’ve not been feeling Gallifrey lately, hence the slowdown in me following along, but not enjoyed the last few as much as I once did. And I’m still not in love with Narvin maybe I’m immune…
Ok good I hate being biased before I listen to something
Oh. Oh no.
Yeah I dunno how I feel about this, feel like the series was perfect for me but I’m just not connecting with it now.
I’ll carry on, because I’ve got this far and I want to continue, but I hope it gets better…
Honestly I think you would vibe more with s4-6 because they’re a bit snappier as episodes and less long winded, such as it were.
I must say I was surprised by all the 9/10s here too bc I haaaaate this episode tbh haha. It’s just dull! I get nothing from it except it’s dull! And I think this is the one where Henzil falls down the steps lol
I defy you to get through s4 and not become a Narvin lover, if you choose to go that far with it
While lacking in its Intrigue, it does have some great Character Moments which save this Play for me massively. Probably one that could work much better when re-listening to the whole Series, for now it gets a very ‘low’ 3.5 from me.
Very excited for Mindbomb.
Appropriation - 7.5/10 - This was a solid one,it lacked Leela but otherwise it was a fine episode,a brief Maxil cameo was pretty cool otherwise not much to say, cant wait for mindbomb, hearing that one is the best gallifrey story in these 3 seasons.
Wasnt too big on this one personally but its quite solid.
I mean technically, there’s a story in war room [1] that’s rated higher, it’s just that it has less ratings, so it shows up as lower in the algorithm. also doesn’t account for number of favourites where I’ve found at least three episodes that have more (actually @shauny is there any chance we could get sorting by number of favourites? that would be pretty cool)
None of that to say that Mindbomb is bad though, I definitely liked it, just to say that there are many statistics and that you should always feel free to make up your own mind. Also I just love statistics, so I hope none of this comes off as discouraging or anything, that’s not how it’s intended
transference ↩︎
Ah but the thing is. Transference is better than Mindbomb. Transference is just. Oh boy. What a story
god I can’t wait until I finally get to all those episodes!

Bit too slow and a little boring for my liking but still a good episode. Feels more series 1 to me pacing wise.
But there are plenty of great scenes! Continue to love Darkel as a villain, the Colin Baker cameo was very cute, and I’m echoing Delta’s comment about Narvin’s character development being very realistic and gradual! That’s my fella!
As everyone else said, it woulda been nice having more Leela.
I do adore the twist at the end though when Matthias’ machinations come together and we learn what he was up to this whole time… Went from being an okay character to a very exciting one!
I’ll give it a 7/10. Still good but just wish it was pacier
