On the contrary, I understand what you’re saying and don’t disagree with it - I do think Leela is presented as more science-phobic in this one than any of her TV stories actually set her up to be. It just doesn’t spoil my enjoyment of Leela and Romana going on a little holiday together.
It’s not even that it bothered me on it coming from Leela. I just feel if we’re going to bring up that issue, I’d like a little more sophistication than something I might expect out of a below average Stargate SG-1 episode.
I too very much enjoyed the holiday atmosphere, especially early on. I don’t want to come across as even disliking the audio as a whole - 7/10 implies I quite enjoyed myself overall, but I definitely didn’t seem to enjoy it as much as the average listener, either.
Again, for sure I do agree with you - if I actually stop to think about it, the conversations Leela and Romana have about the science vs nature thing are incredibly contrived and overexplained. Definitely it could have been presented in a less obvious way, but I guess subtlety isn’t always DW’s best strength
Yeah, this one is excellent. By now Gallifrey settled down for me, while I enjoyed the first Series, I think the second Series just tickles the right button for me. This one in particular being just an exceptional Two-Hander between two great Actresses. The best Type of Who Story are often rich in their Material and especially the Combination of superb acting and superb writing, and this definitely true for this one. As a Character Piece, it’s quite superb.
I do prefer the first Part of this Story a little more than the “Body-Swap”, that said the latter is still quite enjoyable, and I appreciate how this was a bit different from the usual Trope.
Love seeing all the Talk and Analysis this one inspired! Especially from @Jae great Essay!
Thank you! I think S2 really has this series going of the ground, and spirit is an amazing episode, one of my all-time favourites even twenty episodes later. I’ll have to have a look at my essay again sometime, I’m curious whether I have more ideas now, if I do I could make a part two maybe
Character drama that’s primarily a two hander performed by amazing actors, that also gives ominous set up for the rest of the season. Yup this is a banger
Spirit!!!
All-time favourite Gallifrey? Very possibly. I absolutely adore this one. Romana and Leela are sooooo good together, and their arc is absolutely wonderful and sweet. I don’t really have anything exciting to say except they’re so fantastic and gay and this episode is so good! Absolutely gorgeous.
‘Everyone and everything here will be devoted to our pleasure…’ forever haunted by the way Lalla says that…
She’s so like. She is NOT subtle!
There’s a reason why it’s Romana/Leela forever for me <3
Yess they are so in love <3
I’m almost always not a shipping kind of person but god leela/romana is the big exception to that. Spirit (along with Enemy Lines) is definitely one of the best episodes for their relationship.
Relistened to this one yesterday and then once more today. Did you know I love Spirit!! Definitely one of my all-time favourites. And I actually reread my essay further up this thread as well, and I’m surprised how on point I was even six episodes in. Like I remember there being quite a few points in there were it felt like I was reaching almost too far but nearly all of those still form the way I think about these characters. Leela and Romana are everything to me <3
Though I will say that I dislike Leela’s spirituality a bit more by now. Gallifrey please treat Leela as intelligent! (Though war room is great in that regard)
Listened to this again today! (I’m so behind on the relisten lol)
I still do love it, but every time I listen, I like it slightly less.
Love that we got a Romana and Leela focussed story. The scene with Romana smashing the window is delightful, and this story becomes is more tragic knowing who the broken man is.
However, leela’s views and the way Romana treats her does irritate me now in a way I didn’t the first time (mainly because Gallifrey Was my first experience of Leela and I didn’t really know her character that well). I wished Romana could have had more growth after this, because it Feels a little like she acknowledged leela’s differences on a surface level and didn’t really truly understand. And I don’t believe now for one minute that Leela would dismiss evolution! She is smart!!!
LEELA: I was so alone in the world of dreams when you left… The wildlands were dark and so quiet. I… I do not wish to be alone.
ROMANA: There will be a place for you with me. For always. Whatever face I wear.
maybe I’m sensitive today but it does not matter how many times I hear them say this, bawling my eyes out at it again
