However I was quick to resolve that

Sadly, this was another letdown for me. I already had low expectations, and I still ended up not meeting them. I just didn’t feel for the plot or the characters at all.

Kalendorr remains the sole highlight.

A muddled and underwhelming finale that tries to be ambitious but ends up unfocused. The action-packed climax is more noise than substance, and the weak character work makes it hard to care about what happens next. An unsatisfying end to a series that never quite lived up to its potential.

So it has been 6+ months since I listened to the first season, and I give it all a 4/5, but the individual parts blend into each other for me.

I really enjoyed the first season, it’s a shame about it all blending together for me. I know I liked the ending a lot. Now, having heard the second season, I know how it plays into the overall story, so this is just turning into a vague ramble.

To try and have some semblance of sense, I will give a “review” of the first season.

I didn’t have high expectations. Daleks are cool in small doses, but “grating” in large audio doses. So, understandably, the prospect left me worried. Thankfully, they minimise the Daleks while they set up the story. This allowed me to become invested before the “grating” started.

I liked all the characters, with Suz and Kalendorf being my favourites. Even the Daleks had some interesting things to do.

The concept of The Angel of Mercy was interesting, and is something I’m fascinated with from Real Life :tm:. Being seen as a collaborator, while trying your best to help your own people, not realising that you’re really just playing into the enemies hands.

This season did seem like a “first part” of a multi-parter, but I found what was presented engaging, and good enough for me to want to continue listening.

I respect if people don’t like it, but I had low expectations, and ended up really enjoying it.

I feel this episode picks up from the treading water I felt was happening in “Death to the Daleks!” but it does seem a little too much like set up for the next series as it really doesn’t actually end. Tanlee’s reveal as a Dalek agent didn’t convince me at all, especially as we’d only just had Mirana as one too.

Enjoyed this but agree with some of the criticism.

I thought my Spotify had crashed. It does just sort of end out of nowhere.

Liked it. Felt like a suitable ending for Series. Cautiously excited for where this story goes next. 8/10

Project Infinity - 7/10

Another couple of time jumps here, though these ones I feel have enough attention drawn to them that they do really work, and on top of that this story has some really interesting ideas.

The opening where the daleks are seemingly being driven back, with our characters realising that there’s more to it than they’re letting on, and that there’s some connection to project infinity.

Seeing what Alby’s become now, not only because of Suzan’s death, but because of the little he does know about project infinity.

The mental link that the daleks used from last episode being used again here is neat, I especially like the way that it’s used tactically, it makes sense for all dalek positions to be put through the pathweb for tactical reasons, so our characters using that to their advantage is great, and gives a solid explanation as to why they’re not all just immediately killed.

And of course, the reveal of project infinity itself. Multiverse stories are all the rage now, but I can appreciate the fact that they weren’t as much when this released, so it doesn’t fall into the tropiness that can often be associated with them. The fact they’re not wanting to use it to pull resources from another universe to destroy the daleks, but instead wanting to just see what they did and how they can replicate that is a small thing, but I think adds a little touch of realism to it which I appreciate.

Then the ending, out heroes all being captured, the reveal that Susan isn’t dead but is one of many ready to be turned into a dalek, the same thing that’s going to happen to our heroes, and the parallel daleks seemingly being somewhat heroic? it’s an interesting place to end, setting things up for the next season.

Unfortunately however this falls into one of the same pitfalls its three predecessors did, that being that it’s just a bit too long. At 74 minutes, you get the impression that at least 20 minutes could easily have been shaved off, bringing more attention to the actual meat of the story rather than the many long discussions that surround it. I’m definitely not one to complain about taking a moment to talk (see my 11/Valarie reviews), but here it does feel like it drags at times, which unfortunately brings the story down somewhat

Another uninteresting episode. This range is so slow & repetitive, it all could have been told in 3 tighter plotted & exciting episodes. A lot of it has felt like set-up which I thought would all come to a head in this final episode but it ends in a clunky exposition dump, & set up for whatever comes next. Well. It just ends. Abruptly. Nothing here to make me want to continue. Dalek Empire just isn’t for me.

Some stories are like an hour and a half and they feel like 5mins because of how exciting and intriguing they are.

This is not one of them.

Dalek Empire has, so far, committed the #1 DW sin of being boring. This episode had me drifting in and out of thoughts, waiting for it to get interesting, and waiting for it to be over. I wanted to like this series more than I do because I wanted it to surprise me. But I loathe Alby and I don’t care about any of the other characters or the plot. Maybe s2 will be better.

I actually quite enjoyed this! Although, Suze being dead was obviously not true and saw the reveal coming a mile off. Stupid to have two betrayals with Dalek agents as opposed to just one. The ending was good but like… it just ended so abruptly? It could’ve ended with more dialogue or just before anything came through the gateway. I’m glad my earlier criticism of knowing Suze survived to be old was actually a fake-out and it wasn’t old Suze at all!!
