Added note:

This is the point in Big Finish’s Bernice Summerfield range where the audios and books become intertwined. Although we are not going to be including the books in the current club schedule, I will highlight which ones are set before and between the Audio Club focus.

The following books are set prior to the events of The Secret of Cassandra:

This one seems to be one of the more disliked stories but I gave it a 9/10. I remember being surprised a few months ago that I was being contrary to the average score when I relistened, but I stood by my score.

But I don’t remember why anymore :sob:

Guess I’m listening to this this week!

I found this one fine when I listened to it a while back. However, it didn’t wow me. Especially after having previously listened to the audiobook version of The Doomsday Manuscript which was a lot of fun.

I was also a bit surprised to see the low ratings for this one. It’s no classic by any means, but I thought it had an interesting story and some good twists.

8/10

The Secret of Cassandra sets a high bar for Series Two of Bernice Summerfield. It’s smartly written, laced with character-driven tension, and unafraid to pack a deeply personal tragedy into its war-movie setup. There’s something quietly Shakespearean about a story of ghost ships, dead daughters reborn as weapons, and dying generals trying to redeem themselves before the curtain falls.

It’s also slightly overstuffed. The final third throws in so many revelations and reversals that the pacing buckles under the weight, and the sound mix occasionally fights against clarity. But these are minor blemishes on an otherwise compelling audio drama.

I liked this one when I listened to it fairly recently, but did feel a bit let down by it in comparison to series 1, as well as some of the Benny prose stories that came out around series 2.

For those younger members of the forum, when the audio was originally released, this was the cover before the range switched over to Adrian Salmon’s artwork for every release before the box set era began. Feast your eyes upon this:

Perfectly fine. It does have a pretty solid Story, that it executes it the most fine way ever. There are a few Aspects that I rather liked with this one, but that’s kinda about it. Just imagine the various Way to say “Yeah it’s fine, but doesn’t stick with you”.
