I own this one from a Humble Bundle.

I really ought to listen to it sometime…

Just a masterpiece. Very memorable story with great interactions between Davros and Doctor. Every actor does the best they could

For me this is a very good story but not the all timer some people hail it as. It might just be me with this criticism because I think other people interpreted it differently but I remember being bothered by a line where the doctor pretty unambiguously defends the role of capitalist corporations. Just seemed out of character to me. But it is definitely a brilliant character piece to get an insight into what creates such evil in a character, it really does become believable that he turned into such a monster in the conditions which really isn’t easy to do!!!

I went into this one like ugh yeah yeah Davros whatever but no, it is actually a banger. This little trilogy really is good

Unfortunately that’s Lance Parkin’s MO

I enjoy Davros but I don’t think it’s one of Six’s best stories—and I find the idea (Six and Davros working together) more interesting than the execution. But it’s still a good story!

The beginning of an absolutely stacked Audio Club month. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But Colin Baker and Terry Malloy steal the show in some Oscar-level performances.

I’m glad people took away something from this one because I didn’t really get much out of it. Terry Malloy was awesome thought, but I found the politics of Davros a little underdeveloped for what we had going on here. It wound up being pretty low at a 5/10 for me.

Is it maybe a bit overrated? I suppose, but it’s excellent!
With this we get such a great Character Piece, delving further into Davros, and honestly it’s great to have a Story where he is the sole focus, no Daleks to be seen. (Honestly, I am surprised, is that the only Audio Stories where the Daleks don’t appear with him? I think so, at least).
Malloy and Baker are great here, and I love their Interactions, dare I say Baker is the one who has the best banter with Malloy out of any Doctor really, so it was great seeing them face off again. Overall really enjoyed this one!

A fantastic audio debut for Davros, here we have such a steong character piece between him and the Doctor. Malloy and Baker both shine, and the first of their many audio dramas together. And it is lovely to have a Davros story without the Daleks, to let the spotlight properly shine on him.

Utterly fantastic story. A true masterpiece. It’s long, it’s superbly performed and it’s a sharp character study.

5 Points
  1. Compelling Character Study: The audio drama delves deeply into Davros’s psyche, exploring his vulnerability, fractured humanity, and tragic backstory, particularly through flashbacks involving his unspoken love, Shan.

  2. Ambiguity and Tension: The narrative keeps listeners guessing about Davros’s true intentions, balancing the possibility of redemption against his ultimate scheme for intergalactic domination.

  3. Strong Performances: Terry Molloy delivers a career-best as Davros, while Colin Baker’s commanding portrayal of the Sixth Doctor offers fiery philosophical duels. Standout supporting performances from Bernard Horsfall and Wendy Padbury add layers of intrigue.

  4. Thought-Provoking Themes: The story examines power, ambition, morality, and the dangers of corporate greed, making it as intellectually engaging as it is emotionally resonant.

  5. Gripping Pacing and Structure: The two-part format maintains suspense and intrigue, with a particularly effective cliffhanger in Part 1 and a ferocious confrontation in the finale.

Some of the most intense dialogue and gripping internal conflict of a mentally destroyed evil maniac ever and then it just ends. The entire story is like it’s building up to something so marvelous that it can’t possibly exist, and indeed, it can’t because it doesn’t. Had a great time though. Colin Baker remains my pookie, but could’ve done without that capitalism defense.
9/10 very fun and intense, best intro ever, in the end it was about nothing at all really, but it’s about the road not the destination and all.

Really enjoyed the first half of this.

Excellent performances throughout.

A good idea to have the Doctor have to work with Davros.

Some nice anti-capitalist talk.

But then flashbacks reveal Davros copied the Daleks from a girl he fancied? Didn’t like that.

The Doctor outruns a nuclear bomb? Didn’t understand that.

Davros spends the whole time saying he’s changed his mind and become good only to say nah I’m bad again now? Expected that.

The Doctor defends capitalism? Hated that.

The ending? Just a load of shouting really and I’ve already forgotten it.

It’s a shame as it started so well!

I enjoyed this. It’s not perfect, but it’s entertaining enough and carried well by the cast. The Doctor and Davros really are the stars of the show here, with both delivering excellent performances.

I also like how it sort of acts as a bridge between Resurrection and Revelation, giving Davros the idea for Soylent Green, I mean Tranquil Repose. Unfortunately, the backstory does seem to clash with I, Davros (or rather I, Davros clashes with this since this came first).

Remember, Davros, you can’t say “team” without “t(ea)!”

Ever since I listened to this, I’ve had the “tut tut, naughty Doctor” line in my head.

This was phenomenal. I think the villain trilogy I’d rank this second, with Master in first and Omega in last. All three were good though. I didn’t like the Doctor defending capitalism though…

Six spotting Davros and immediately abandoning all pretense of stealth to run over and call him out is the best Six moment in the canon and I won’t come down from this hill.

Re-listening to this is always a good experience.
There’s a lot of fun to be had listening to Davros and Ol’ Sixie working together.

It’s just such a great section of the Main Range with these “big villain” centric stories + Doctors without companions :slightly_smiling_face:

Graaaaaa-viiiiiiiii-tyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
